Did you do anything special on that day for your child? I'm not talking about buying him gifts, per se, but something to celebrate our new adventure? What about for his teacher that we are saying goodbye to? She is really great, as is the principle, so I'd love to thank them in an appropriate way. What did you do? Any suggestions?

I think a really nice note to the teacher and principal would be appreciated as much as any gift.

We didn't do anything when we took our kids out of school because we let them finish out their year. However, on the first day back to school in the fall (when ps started up) I took them all to IHOP and let them order whatever they wanted. I have never paid that much for breakfast- Ever!
Maybe you could take them to a museum or some other kind of field trip on the first day of homeschool.

My dc loved the clipboards they got to pick out for their homeschooling adventure (the clipboards are handy for when they want to do their schoolwork while sitting in their "nest" of pillows and blankets). But if you plan to do school more formally at desks or a table this idea wouldn't work!
When I removed my kids from school I made sure to thank the teachers and let them know what I appreciated about them during the time they taught my boys. I also made sure to facilitate a proper "goodbye" between my child and his teacher (basically made sure my 5yo didn't run from the room without saying goodbye etc). I wanted to make sure they didn't think we were just running out of there. I think for teachers it can hurt a bit to have a child removed to homeschool so I tried to make sure they knew we appreciated them and that this was just a choice we were making for our family.

Field trip day!! I would write nice notes for the teacher and principal and possibly a teacher gift - candle, gift certificate to local teacher store, nice lotion, chocolate (hey, if hs teachers needs it I am guessing the classroom teacher needs it all the more!)

I think a nice note for the teachers and principal would be a good thing.
we've always homeschooled, but I know our kids really love- usually on the first day "back" to school (for the new year) going somewhere in the middle of the day, "just because we can", like going to the beach or walking around a neat old town and having lunch, something like that.
wishing you a great launch with your new adventure!
