What I mean is how much weight do you give to different things...
Quizzes
Tests
Regular assignments
Papers required
Do you have your kids take a midterm? Final exam? Do you give more weight to those?
We're currently doing catch-up on English/Language Arts and Math and just starting high school level social studies, science and a community college level Introduction to Computers course. I'm not sure if I should even include the English and Math on his transcript (he will be doing high school level English and Math when he gets caught up). I definitely want to keep track of what he's doing, though, and feel like I should be giving grades even for the stuff that probably won't make it onto his transcript.

I was sorta mean and weighted my son's quizzes/tests at 50%, with his daily work at another 50%. He is finishing up high school at a private school and most of his teachers there rate quizzes/tests at 10% and the mid-term/final at another 10% with the daily work making up the rest.

I count daily work, but not the grades they earn on it--just the fact that it's done. I weight papers & test by their difficulty. That said, I teach to mastery, which I consider 90% or above. So if a test or paper isn't up to snuff, they redo, re-take until they've achieved mastery. I will not be using a traditional grading system on ds's transcripts for any of the courses I've done, but will for outside courses that gave grades. I will indicate that they mastered the subject and let SAT II's, AP's, etc. prove that.

We should be giving grades??
Just kidding....sort of...I agree with Laurie4b....teach to mastery.
I want dd to "know" the classes she is learning. She takes the tests that comes with the curriculum, but any she misses I hand it back and have her correct what she missed. I think her knowing the info, and being able to tell me about it in her own words is more important that a number grade.
