Is there anyone out there who has a son who is passionate about a military career? Anyone whose son wants to go to Annapolis? Are you doing anything different for their junior / senior year to help them meet there goal? If so, would you share?

Thanks,

Lisa

My son is very passionate about a military career with the Army. A military school never fit into our lifestyle because we chose to prepare our son for either college or self-employment. We also wanted him to be able to pay for his college or have enough money to start a business, so he worked a lot throughout junior and senior high. He has flip-flopped between wanting to be self-employed and being in the military, so we felt it was best to take a road that would prepare him for each.

Because of these choices for our family, he would never be admitted to a military school or even qualify for a non-ROTC scholarship. They want to see things like volunteer work, sports, etc. The fact that he will have saved $40,000 by the time he graduates, the fact that he has great work ethic, the fact that he has schooled himself while holding down a practically full-time job pales in comparison to whether he helped out at the local nursing home or played baseball.

My son spends most of his free time studying military strategy and battles. He is currently reading The American Way of War and Pagasus Bridge. He finshed The Art of War some time back. He watches every applicable documentary he can get his hands on. He also plays paintball when he can.

Right now he is also training to be a pacer (to run the last 25 miles of a 100 mile race my brother will run in May). He runs his first 8K this weekend. He has only been training since January.

We spoke to the ROTC officer at a local 4-year college last week about the different possibilities. We are still researching the differences between and the benefits of the SMP program and an Army ROTC scholarship.

If your son would ever like to talk with another person of the same interest, let me know. Sometimes our son feels like he's a different breed and doesn't really know anyone with the same passion.

Our homeschooled sons went to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, probably among the first to go, and they really enjoyed the structure and the great life there. I wrote an article which was published in Homeschooling Today magazine, about getting your son into an academy. If you'd like to read it, you can find it on our website at www.latintrivium.com... On the home page, scroll down to "Published Article by Mary Harrington" and you may enjoy reading of their experiences.

Today, one is a Marine officer in San Diego, and the other one is a Navy pilot in New York. The military has been good for them, although I did worry when they were deployed to Iraq.
