My 9th grader will be studying American History up to the Civil War this year using several different resources and a reading list I'm putting together. For meatier non-fiction I have 1776 by David McCullough and Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. These will be right at challenge level for her reading, and I don't want her to rush through, so need just one more to kind of capture the time period from about 1800-1860.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi!
Maybe add a good bio of Andrew Jackson or James Polk? I think McCulloch has a book about one of those two. I have seen things like that at Costco recently. Hope this helps!

I looked at McCullough's other books but I'm not seeing anything else written for this period. I'm wondering if something on the Underground Railroad or slavery would be a good way to round out the three main periods she'll be covering. I could do something on the Oregon Trail/Westward Expansion, but we've already read a lot and are very familiar with that piece since we live in an Oregon Trail state. Also I want to stay away from the Native American piece until next year, because there is a lot more of that in the post Civil war period and I think waiting will help put it into context.
How about this one:
Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America
Thanks for all input :)
