For those who used Singapore and Life of Fred, when did you switch or suppplement. Is 4A too early? Did you wait until you finished level 6?

We did LOF Fractions after 4b, LOF D/P after 5b, and I'm hoping to do his new LOF Pre-Algebra w/ Biology after 6b. We've basically been doing Singapore during the school year and LOF in the summers.

Sadly, I can't remember exactly when ds started LOF fractions. We definitely didn't wait until he finished level 6. I think he was around 4b or so.

I'd say go for it. DS loved Life of Fred.

She liked LOF so much she didn't want to go back to Singapore? So, have you been doing LOF exclusively since then?

She liked LOF so much she didn't want to go back to Singapore? So, have you been doing LOF exclusively since then? No, but LOF was something of a revelation for her. Singapore was moving too slowly to keep her engaged; she needed more new material. I gave her the option of moving sequentially through topics from year to year, but she declined. She finished LOF Fractions and Decimals & Percents and is now in a holding pattern until algebra. She's only 7, and *I'm* not willing to add the amount of time to our school day algebra would require. We'll revisit the question in two years or so.

Here's what's lined up for the next year and a bit.

selected bits from Mathematics 6 (http://www.perpendicularpress.com/)

We'll add in other supplemental material if necessary. She'll also do the LOF pre-algebra books as they are available -- as far as she's concerned, they can't be released fast enough.

Plus four days a week she gets a warm up pack with a couple logic exercises, some little math puzzle (currently working through the Brain Maths series), a word problem, and a shortish column of facts practice (e.g. squares to 15^2). Warm-up rarely takes more than 15 or 20 minutes.

Next fall, I'll probably start her in Elements of Mathematics discussed in this thread (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112786).

Thank you! Very Helpful. I love Singapore in the early levels, but DD has started to drift and wander a bit... If level 4 gets to be dreadful, I'll take a break with something else.

My dd started in the middle of 4A. It has worked well. She is nearly done Fractions and is about to start 4B.

For challenge how about letting her do some math contests? There are many online ones, so it doesn't matter where you live. I just found a list of many of them and posted it on my squidoo lens - http://squidoo.com/contests-for-students. (http://squidoo.com/contests-for-students)

Oh, I was just wondering this, great! (Dd is turning 4 though :blush5: but I just discovered LOF and am counting the months until she will be ready, lol. As she just started subtracting for fun it won't be anytime soon, obviously ). I think I'll do LOF myself to brush up before then....

Our first LoF books are Beginning Algebra & Geometry. However, I can see I"m going to need to get the LoF Fractions book for my 11 yo, so ds will do it either during SM 4 or 5. Not sure if or when I'll get the decimals book, since that has been pretty straightforward so far. However, my vs dd tends to forget some of the fractions rules even now. Mainly dividing fractions, and she has done MUS and seen what's really going on; she understood it, but then put it out of her mind and has done this a few times when she's had breaks from fractions. I don't like the way Mr. Demme does it and prefer the regroup and multiply way--is this how it's handled in LoF Fractions?
