My ds is 7 and dyslexic. Finally feel like I'm on the right track with his reading, but now I am concerned about math.
I used Righstart with him for about 1 1/2 years, but he just wasn't getting it--not enough review etc. So I switched to R&S at the beginning of this year, which I am pretty happy with.
His problem is that let's say he is holding up 4 fingers on one hand and 1 on the other, he doesn't automatically know that that is 5. He brings his one finger over to the 4 and counts them. In the year and a half that we used Rightstart(and I still pull out the abacus) he has never been able to see the numbers in groups--like if there were 7 beads or so, he'd count them, instead of seeing 5 and 2. On an individual day, after having used it a while, I think he ended up getting it, but then he'd lose it by the next day.
I would think that after him having done math for almost 3 years now, that he would be able to visualize these numbers. So I'm just wondering if this is a trait of a specific learning disability that I might look into.
