I am looking for a hands on science program
that is easy to implement for a 6th grader and isn't
time consuming for we are filling in reading and spelling
gaps.

Science in a Nutshell kits come to mind. Lots of people like NOEO science. I am in the same boat. BIG math, writing, and spelling gaps.

Home Science Tools has some nice, reasonably priced kits which come with instructions, etc: Here's a link to their Physics Introduction Kit:

http://www.hometrainingtools.com/catalog/physical-science-physics/force-motion/force-motion-books-kits/p_kt-physics.html

and one to their Electricity and Magnetism Kit:

(There are a number of other nice little kits focusing on other areas of physics.)

For middle school chemistry we liked the Microchem kit paired with a chem book. (We used the Zumdahl's Introductory Chemistry (ISBN 0669220094))

"How Earth Works" is broken into a 2-page "spread" for each topic, allowing you the ability to go deeper if you have the time or interest, plus has lots of hands-on experiments. We did some additional books from the library as we had time, as well as looked up some short video clips and photos on the internet about things like erosion, etc. We also added several kits, esp. the TOPS unit "Rocks & Minerals". FUN year! BEST of luck in finding what works well for your family! Warmly, Lori D.
