Would it be to simple to have my 7th grader continue story of the world vol 2 with my younger 2 kids? He is doing it this year fine. I already purchased it for my girls next year...but I am debating about my son. If I start him reading LL 7, I was planning on doing BF Medieval history...But he hates to read. I am thinking more and more...Do you think I can continue SOTW and give him supplemental reading from BF without the guide?
I dont want to overload him as we are new homeschooling this year 6 grade. He has not done a ton of reading this year. I am moving very slowly into Literature with him. He really hates reading tons of stories...and will sit for hours without going anywhere in a book. I am scared to spend all that money for him on BF and get nowhere.
I cant figure out what else to do if we dont use BF? I don't want to get into the streams of civilization books if I can use them for highschool...and then get stuck later.
Any suggestions if I should just go ahead and do SOTW 2 with supplements or another program?
Thanks,
Michelle

He is absolutely loving it. It has made him want to do history every day. Before this, he had no desire to read anything about history. This is all he does...just read a chapter and answer some questions from the activity guide, and I think that's enough. I'm not overly concerned because we have language/spelling/grammar issues that we are remediating before highschool.
He has already asked for SOTW for the 8th grade and I will add the tests to beef it up for him, but nothing else unless it comes from him. I will not get into serious history study with him until the 9th grade.
It works for us, and you have to look at where you are at and what you know you and your child can handle. I have been so surprised the appeal that SOTW has had on my son.

I will be finishing SOTW 4 this year (hopefully!) My oldest will be in 6th grade. I am deciding whether to purchase Arnter's guide to American History for her, or have her do SOTW 1 with the younger kids. She did SOTW 1 when she was in Kindergarden (it has taken us a little longer to get throught the 4 books...)
It would be so much easier to have everyone be on the same page!!! I like the idea of having the older ones do the tests. She is going to be reading the Iliad and The Odyssey, so I don't want to overload her with so much reading.
Gosh, I wish someone could figure this all out for me!!!!!

I think as long as you add in something along with just the text, you would be fine. I just finished SOTW 1 with my 6 and 8 year olds, and we added in some extra books here and there.
I think it is a great spine, and great for getting the flow of history!
Even just the Usborne or Kingfisher encyclopedias (which add more info and fabulous pictures) help a lot. I also noticed lots of great historical fiction and non-fiction resources for children older than mine. I am looking forward to using them when we cycle through SOTW again.
You could also supplement with videos from the library or the Teaching Co. Schlessinger media has some videos on the ancient Mayan, Inca and so forth. Then there's the middle ages one and the Renaissance one. There are tons of videos on Egypt, Greece and Rome as well.

I am using SOTW with my 7th,6th and 5th graders with the corresponding Kingfisher and Usborne. I also incorporate History Scribe/Scholar sheets as well, when I want them to spend extra time on a particular area of study. It works very well and they are entirely engaged. HTH
