This is what they said:
Thank you for your interest in The Homeschool Lounge. It is with regret that we must decline your application at this time. If you think you've been declined in error, you can contact the administrator at administrator@thehomeschoollounge.com
If your membership was declined it was most likely for one or more of the following reasons...
• An incomplete profile, you did not fill out all of the required application questions.
• You are not a Homeschool Mom, our site is for Homeschooling moms or soon to be Homeschooling moms only, no men allowed, we do not allow the curious or those contemplating homeschooling at this time. We have these guidelines set in place for the safety and comfort of our members.
If you are contemplating homeschooling and need information there is a vast amount of information by simply searching "Homeschool Helps" or "Homeschool Starting Out" in any search engine.
If you have a family member on the site (such as your Daughter and you are the homeschooling grandmother) please send us the member name of your relative and we will approve your membership.
Sincerely,
THL Admin
I wonder what I said to make them think I wasn't a homeschooling mom?!?
I find this very, very amusing. I think I may have answered some of the questions tongue-in-cheek. Maybe that was it?

You know you're really a fifty-year-old man, sitting at the computer in your underwear, pretending to be a homeschool mom!
I have to say...you've done a good job here, of protecting your cover. ;-)
Well, bless their hearts.
I'm always reluctant to share too much information with groups like that. I want to see what I'm signing up for before I actually sign up. That's why I don't bother with a lot of the Yahoo! groups anymore. I understand that they're trying to keep spammers out, but the ones that want to know why I want to join? Well -- I don't *know* if I want to join, I want to see what you have to offer so I can decide if I want to join!
I was denied membership in our local Freecycle group because I couldn't think of what to say. I'm not going to beg!
You're better off here anyway. ;-)

With a lot of lists the problem is the admin doesn't check their email. An email goes to the admin and if it's not approved within a certain number of days it's automatically declined. I've seen that problem with a lot of lists.

I wasn't really that interested. A friend and I were laughing at the women drinking coffee on the homepage and I joined to see if it was that funny through out... so my motives were not... entirely pure, shall we say? I would not have been vocal in my mocking, though. I would have kept it private!
I guess they saw through me!

Well, I was only interested to see if they'd actually approve me based on my email name (electricbarbarella) and they did..
But as for the ties between them and HomeschoolBlogger, etal.. all I can find and this is purely circumstancial, is that they each advertise with each other. Lounge with Old Homeschool and vice versa. I'm still looking though...

they ask you for your name, how long homeschooling, how you homeschool (what kind of stuff you use), ages of your kids and how you heard about them. Oh and they ask you to speak about yourself.
And that's what gets me--I said "I am a crunchy momma, totally liberal in every way" and I figured that would have killed it for me, that and my email addy.
But it didn't. So maybe Heather was channeling a little of my snark when she signed up? ;)

It has been so stinkin' long, I can't remember! I have no clue! I expect I said something odd when asked to talk about myself. Along the lines of "I homeschool, isn't that enough?" and I may have replied "books" when asked what I use to teach. Maybe they thought I was a troll.

Hello Ladies,
Heather,
I am sorry you were declined membership on THL, we have a few folks on our team approving members so I can not tell you exactly why you were declined but I can tell you we have had some , to put it nicely "freaks" trying to get on the site so we have all been very weary. If you did not fill out every question that might have been it. We figure if folks don't want to take the time to fill out the form then they don't really want to be there.:D
Toni,
We don't discriminate in any way! If you are a homeschool mom, you are always more then welcome on The Lounge! All are welcome, we have groups for everyone! Liberal or not!
We are NOT affiliated with any group or site whatsoever! My husband and I thought a site like the Lounge was needed in the HS community and so a year ago we started researching to see how we could make our vision a reality and on Feb. 14th we launched the site! We are not just a forum, more of a community.
We have to have advertisers and sponsors to make up the costs for the Lounge to keep it FREE to our members.
As for the lady with the coffee, well that could be me any given day of the week, and as for the lovey dovey feel of the site I guess I am a lovey dovey kinda girl but I am also many other things like a rough and tumble mama of 4 boys, I love pink, I love black and I love how you all talk so freely and honestly on this forum! Thats a good thing.
Well ladies its been fun reading but my arm is numb as well as the one finger I have typed this post with (holding a sick, sleeping baby)
If The Lounge looks appealing to you we would love to have you join if you have anymore questions , ask away!
Thanks,
Tiany

Tiany, that was a very thoughtful reply :-)
I, of course, would probably not be approved, because although I am not a 50yo man sitting at the computer wearing his undies I am no longer hsing, having graduated both of my dds many years ago. Happily there are enough other places for me to spend time with my favorite peeps--homeschoolers:)

Tiany (I LOVE that name),
Thanks for taking the time to post here. As you can tell (especially with me), some of us are a bit leery of new places when it comes to a certain feel or look. I've had my issues with HSB before and they were very big. You can also tell I am most vocal on this site and while I didn't join to cause trouble(on yours), I was curious to see if I would be declined based on my name (I half attempted to change my sign in name from Antonia to GothicGyrl, which is who and what I am) just to see what would happen--mainly because I can't fathom someone like Heather being declined membership anywhere. Me, yes. Her, no. ;)
In any case, if you say you are not associated with HSB or Old Homeschool House, then I will keep lurking and checking. I am by far computer illiterate and your site is giving me fits right now(it is loading horribly).
So please don't be offend by what I said. Honestly, I am touchy, lovey person too, but the whole feel of the community you have is so not me--I am very used to just throwing it out there for discussion and having at it. ;)

Toni, I don't blame you for being leery of the site, I promise we don't bite! I have no clue what the problem with HSB Awards or HSB is? I pretty much stick with my blog and my site and I am actually one of the few bloggers that has crawled out of the HSB box and most of my readers are from blogger. I like the ease of the HSB site.
Carole, I don't know who Mimi Rothschild is, sorry.:D
Sophia,
Would you be so kind as to elaborate on why you think the site is difficult to navigate?

Since you asked, I'll just lay out it there:
Homeschool Blogger or The Old Homeschool House--I do not support because they support the Pearl's and their child abuse.
Mimi Rothschild--Jubilee/Morningstar/amongst others Academy--she is a theif and a liar and does not produce what is claimed.
These things I cannot support. If you do not have them attached to your site in any way--cool ;) If you do, then I have to remove my membership.
And I don't know about Sophia--but I am having a serious problem getting your site to load--when it does, it locks me out of loading or refreshing any other site. Then I can't click on anything and if I do get it to click, it's a delayed load, which then still locks me out of other sites until it loads fully.
Your format is much different than most board formats--not that that is wrong, but just different. I think I've got the board format figured out, it's just the loading problem. It also locked up and shut down my IE when I tried it there.
And Scarlett-- PTHHBBTHTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTBHBBHBT!!! ;)

My thoughts exactly. But I guess you didn't receive one so maybe it came from other hs scammer; but where??? I don't get email from her, or hslda, and I haven't been near OHH or HSB forever....... strange, very strange.
Tiany
03-11-2008, 05:21 PM
I am not one to get offended by words, they are just words!;) Frankly lifes too short to get "my" undies in bunch over this kind of thing, you're speaking your mind and there is no rule against that!
We cant please everyone, can we?
Right now THL and IE don't get along, the site works best in Firefox. It's a bug with IE, not our site. We are however working on a fix.
"Jubilee/Morningstar/amongst others Academy" I still have no clue, never heard of them!
As for the set up of the site it is not supposed to be set up like a forum, it is a Social Network, we have groups, chat, blogs, message board, videos, photos and music all in one community but again like I said it can't be for everyone.:)
With that, I will leave you lovely ladies to your forum and bid you farewell!:D
Blessings,
Tiany

Well, bless their hearts.
I'm always reluctant to share too much information with groups like that. I want to see what I'm signing up for before I actually sign up. That's why I don't bother with a lot of the Yahoo! groups anymore. I understand that they're trying to keep spammers out, but the ones that want to know why I want to join? Well -- I don't *know* if I want to join, I want to see what you have to offer so I can decide if I want to join!
I was denied membership in our local Freecycle group because I couldn't think of what to say. I'm not going to beg!
You're better off here anyway. ;-)
Then I would just say that  when you do join a yahoo group. They are keeping the spammers out and let me tell you from experience its very annoying when they get into your group.

Yes, sometimes I've actually forgotten to specifically say that I homeschool or have adopted or have allergies, which is the one piece of information they are looking for so am rejected. When I try again I've always been approved.

I wonder if they have a home school DADS forum that my husband can join? He's the stay-at-home teacher, I do the extra-curricular stuff (like taking our daughter to wrestling tournaments).

This thread is very old - as in over a year old. Perhaps you might ask your question on a new thread?

Sounds like you got standard form letter treatment. I had a similar experience with a hobby group but I did not pursue it further. Hope you get accepted without further hazing if you really want in the group.
