CTY: Descartes' Cove Math

My DD does 5th grade math with CTY. What is the Descartes's Cove math CD like? Games? Fun? Boring?

Would a child whose already doing school math plus CTY math benefit from the CD?

I would only want to buy it if it was fun, interesting and somewhat challenging, but not too much. I'm more interested in it being fun. Her schedule is too full as it is.

I would have her look at the demo. I know the demo is on the www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org (http://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org) right now for the 30% off group buy. I had my DD look at the demo, since it reminds me of the computer game Mist in many ways. She thought it was really cool and begged me to buy it that day. We are getting it for her in the next month or so. I think that would be your best bet since children have different interests, mine is a gamer.

Descartes Cove is still on sale at HomeSchoolBuyers.com through 11/30/09. It does not come with the Instruction Guide, however. You can buy this separate at JH -- but is it necessary? thanks!

I recently ordered my set from the HBC and it came with a Teaching Guide. I haven't really gone through it yet, but it seems comprehensive and included a Solutions CD.

My DS9 is doing Singapore 4B (which is way too easy, but we're covering our bases with SM) and Thinkwell Beginning Algebra (on which he typically gets 100%), yet he still found the first Descartes CD on Measurement quite challenging.

It's really a fun game, by the looks of it. He asked to do it on a Sunday afternoon, if that's any indication. I was concerned it might be too hard, but he wanted to keep plugging at it even though he wasn't getting all the problems right on his first try, so I think he found it quite fun.

My DD is finding it challenging as well. She just started it. I bought the Instructors Guide and don't regret the money but haven't looked at the solutions CD yet so I can't comment there.

Thanks Lisa and MelMichigan for sharing your DCs' experience with it. I'm glad to hear the package from HSB is complete and the program itself is well-worth it. I think I will definitely get it for my DD11 and 9 as a present - it will be good summer enrichment! thanks again!:001_smile:
