I have a question for any parents that have chosen to use the EPGY program for their children (either as a supplement or core curriculum). I was just wondering what your opinion was. I am considering enrolling my 2 children and would love as much feedback as possible.
Thanks so much,
Nicole

We are considering it too... I'd love to hear lots of specific likes and dislikes :)

I'm also interested. Does EPGY have a lower age limit? I was thinking of using it for younger DD (age 4-1/2).

I can't answer to everyone's opinions. So far the feed back I have gotten is positive. I can say that the EPGY open enrollment program is open for K thru pre-algebra in math. The LAW classes are 2-6. There aren't specific age requirements used in the open enrollment program.
The individual program is another story and does have age requirements of it's students. Just as it has qualification criteria. There aren't as many people using the open enrollment program on this board. The majority of my group is on the Davidson Forum. That might account for the lack of responses to your questions. You might want to look there to read some of their responses.:)

We use EPGY to supplement our children's schooling (private school) - it's an afterschooling thing for us, year-round. We do math sessions 5 times a week and we will start to do 1-2 language arts sessions a week starting soon. So far it's been very good, and it helps me feel that my kids will stay competitive in advanced mathematics. I have a 5th grader and a 3rd grader (starting this year) - so far the 5th grader is right at level and the 3rd grader is at 3.5 grade. BTW, my kids do not love it as much as I had hoped, but I think that's because it's tough. They do have a local mentor that they meet with once a quarter and can call if we have any problems. Hope this helps someone to evaluate the program.

I think it's a good program, but there is a potential for a bright child to accelerate too much, getting to a level they either aren't ready for or can't/shouldn't do the work for. When we did it (a decade ago exactly), a lot of parents felt their students could use more practice. I agree. Though I'm glad kids can go on, I do think they also need more practice. This should have been better built in. Of course, you can use a supplemental program to help with that. My daughter did 4 grade levels in a quarter. I'm not sure that should be possible, especially since she didn't even do it regularly. But the issue became whether a 7yo could/should put in the time requirements of the high school maths. We decided no. She did move on, but not systematically or with any time requirements...not with EPGY.
HOWEVER, I do wish we had returned. She could have done a quick overview of the Algebras and moved on from there. That would have been a very good situation once she was like 10 or 11. And I think she would have enjoyed the university maths as a high schooler.
I also wish we had gone with this program for my other child. Again, 10 probably would have been a good age to jump in.

We've used EPGY math with our oldest. He loved it... we stopped using it last year because even with the financial aid, it was too pricey for us at this time (came out to about $75 a month).
The thing that amazed me the most about it was how NOT exciting it was --- no animations, dancing animals, and a very "math professor" voice. Ds loved it because it was math, it was on the computer, and he didn't have to do too much repetition.
My dh (who does most of the teaching in our home) really wants to budget to get ds back in EPGY. Ds seemed to learn so much more than he does with our 2nd choice, Singapore.

If there is not enough interest in my district through the school or the homeschool group, is there another way to enroll? I am set for this year, but would like to have something like this for next year. I was looking at ALEKS as well, but this seems more affordable.

It's $135 a year from June to May 2010, per student.

My son has been doing math and the LAW through EPGY for 3 weeks and so far we are very happy with it. Pamela's concern seems to have been addressed by the EPGY programmers because now you can choose to adjust the amount of review/exercises.
I don't see how a kid could go too fast because if they start getting exercises wrong, it gives more instruction and practice. You only proceed beyond a certain concept if you are getting things done correctly. But as I said, you can increase the quantity of exercises if you like.
Now we're only 3 weeks in so far so take my thoughts with a grain of salt!

What is the open enrollment group for EPGY and how do I get my ds involved?
