My dd is 10 and in 4th grade. This is her first report. We edited for obvious mistakes, but I am not a strong writer - any feedback would be appreciated.
Hedgehogs are fascinating creatures of the wild, but they have recently been domesticated as pets. I fell in love with the little guys when I saw a lady on Pet Star with one doing tricks. I hope you will learn a thing or two about hedgehogs.
Hedgehogs are warm-blooded mammals, which means they give birth to live babies, breath air, and have a backbone. They usually have around 500 quills on their body and a full grown hedgehog can weigh up to 250 grams. Hedgehogs are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and are awake at night. Hedgehogs also like to burrow (like in your sleeve), and make nests in their cage. One of the things they like best is to just snuggle.
Hedgehogs are omnivores, which means they eat vegetables such as, lettuce, celery, and leaves but also meat like mealworms and other bugs. Hedgehogs were wild animals so when they were domesticated as pets they still kept some of their wild traits like making a nest, burrowing and snuggling with family.
If you are thinking about getting a hedgehog, here are some things you should know. Your hedgehog's cage should be at least two square feet in size and should have a wheel, a litter box, a food dish, a water bottle and a toy or two. Your hedgehog will need a lot of attention especially when you first bring him or her home. You should probably get your hedgehog from a breeder because he or she will know everything you need to know about raising a happy, healthy hedgehog.
Thanks!
