Have any of you used either of these and what did you think of them? What age/grade are they geared for?

I haven't read the books but I did watch the movie "Castle" based on his book. That was good, older but held the kids interest.

I own a couple of the Foster books, and plan on using them for 7th grade history next year.

I'm using some of her "World Of" books with my 8th graders this year. I've used her "Year Of" books with younger (elementary aged) kids.

I love them! The kids like them, too.

My 13 year old has been reading through Augustus Caesars World, The World of Columbus and Sons, George Washingtons World, and Abraham Lincolns World. I think they're fabulous and enjoyed them myself as an adult. I think they're best for junior high aged kids.

DS 10 & 12 are currently reading August Caesar's World and City. We read Pyramid months ago. Excellent books. My kiddos love them.

My middle dd loves the Foster books. We started reading them when she was in 6th grade. My other two think they're okay, but aren't enthusiastic about them.

to take a lot of "facts" with a grain of salt. Maybe with an entire salt mine of salt :D

We did the Foster's as read alouds in the grammar stage and my older dd is now reading through them alone in the logic stage. I love both style and content.
I can not personally get into the book's that Macauley has, they are beautiful but it just isn't my style. I do own and love all the videos and the whole family enjoys them and learns a great deal from them.

Yes, I second this book. It's great for adults and older students.

If I had older kids I would seriously consider reading "Motel of Mysteries" with them as part of Egpt or as part of Troy. He seems to draw heavily on both Carter and Schilemann. I've heard rumors that there are serious devotees among archiologists as well. Of course it could also be done as part of ecology...

My kids love the Macaulay books, they really do an excellent job of presenting the topic in a fun and interesting way without becoming to cartoony.
