View Full Version : What kind of flooring would you prefer in a homeschool room?

I'm thinking about hardwood because (if it actually gets built this spring) the homeschool room would be right off our dining room in which we would like to lay hardwood flooring this spring. So, it would match. We're planning to do art projects and science experiments in this room, however, so I'm wondering if hardwood floors are easy to clean up and durable?

and the reason I say hardwood is this:
1) art would be easier to clean up when they turn over the paint
2) those tiny pieces of paper the 4 y/o likes to cut would be easier to sweep up
3) when mom spills her drink it would be easier to mop up ;)
4) every time they bump the growing seeds in the window ledge it would be easier to clean up.

oh yes, hardwood all the way!!!

Rubber!

We chose rubber. It's easy to clean, doesn't nick, spills are no big deal. :)

Where did you find this? Sounds like something I'd like to use in teh basement in the kids' playroom. (I'd also like it for my walls!! They're coming to take me away - hahahehe . . . )

We remodeled our school room and put in Pergo wood laminate last May. It has held up very well, even with the office chairs on wheels. In addition, I find it much easier to clean up eraser dust (which we have a lot of everday). It's easy to clean and keep clean; I'm pleased with the choice we made.

Actually, I prefer something padded all the way around. ;) :D  You know so when all of us have our little mental lapses!

Just don't do carpet. We put carpet in and I really regret it.

I think any hard floor option would fit the bill. If you know you'll be working with items that stain, put a drop cloth down.

I'm curious about rubber floors - any pictures?

Pergo is almost indestructable. This past year we painted a room and its furniture and I dripped black enamel on the pergo floor. I didn't realise it until after the paint had dried. I was able to rub the paint right off with a dry cloth.

Since it will be connected with the dining room, definitely match the hardwood. I have prefinished engineered hardwood (Kahrs brand). It is as durable as Pergo, but it is real wood. It's beautiful. It cleans easily. I had a whole bottle of india ink spill and partially dry on my school room floor (yuck), but it came right up with alcohol. No stain. No damage to the finish from the alcohol. Love it!

I think you'll be much happier if those two rooms "flow". I, too, have prefinished hardwoods (Brazilian cherry from Bellawood) and could not be more pleased! I would recommend going with as hard a wood as you can for longterm durability, especially if you have pets.

We like it a lot - the look is interesting and it's wearing well (we've had it for about 2 1/2 years). It's very easy to clean up, an easily-renewable resource, and is warm under foot.

Best wishes

We have a laminate wood flooring in ours and I did just get a large area rug so DS can grab a throw pillow and lay on the floor to read. I need to get pads for the chairs because I despise the sound of the chair feet dragging on the floor.

Another vote here for either real hardwood, or wood laminate to match the dining room. We've had wood laminate in another home, and I loved it. When we redo the floors in this house, depending on our financial situation at the time, I want either real hardwood or wood laminate everywhere except the bedrooms.

We have laminate flooring, too. :) I think hardwood wood work well & flow well, too.
