I like the Milicent Selsam ones -- they're readers, not real meaty -- but I enjoy them. :) Some have evolutionary content, though.
She writes some of the I Can Read Science books which I like.
I also like Gail Gibbons science books.

Let me give you authors because the titles will be WAY too much:
Jean Craighead George (One Day in the ...) series
Jim Arnosky (any but Crinkleroot books are great)
Arthur Dorros
Lindsay Barrett George (Who's been here?) series
Marilyn Singer
Dianna Hutts Aston
Patricia Polacco
Charles Micucci (The Life and Times) series
Anthony D. Fredericks ***excellent author
Ann Mcgovern
Michael Elsohn Ross
Don Brown
Aliki
Barbara Brenner
Rochelle Strauss
Sharon Lovejoy
Check out Yesterday's Classics (http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/catalog/displaycatalog.php?catalog=nature), the books Among the Pond People, Among the Forest People, etc. are excellent reading books for this age and if you look at the age ranges, you'll see other books that are good reads in the science section. I'm about to have my daughter (7) read Mother West Wind's Children by Thornton Burgess and she'll probably read his other books like The Adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel.
Also check out Creative Mind Biographies, they are by different authors so I didn't list them but these are good. If you like to hunt for books, check out books by Robert McClung. I just got a wonderful book about a hummingbird by him from Goodwill. He also wrote an old science series called All About Books which is perfect for this age.
Hope this helps,

Queen Homeschool has Animal Autobios:

and living books about nature:

Note: I have not used these, so I don't know how good they are.
