I was just sitting here wondering how I can make my ds going to "2nd/3rd" grade special. I didn't do anything with him last year--I didn't even give him a certificate (bad mama). I would love to hear what others have done.
thanks.

You know what my kids love the most? Opening up the boxes of the new school curricula when it arrives. :) It never fails! LOL.

Nope. We hardly acknowledged "grades" in our homeschool. Our sons didn't even know what grade they were "in".

Mekanamom : YES, that is the best way to start the year. I agree.

Our dc know what grade they're "in", but we don't do any sort of celebration when they move from year to year.

celebrations for actual achievements, as they occur, and birthdays, but since I don't believe that homeschooled children are actually "in" "grades," no, we didn't do any sort of celebration.

There has never been a clear line between grades for us. Dd has been working at different grade levels depending on the subject. When we finish one book, we often just go ahead and open the next book even if it is a different "grade".

That's funny. :) About half way through this school year someone asked my ds what grade he was in and he said "grade 2." I had to correct him to say, "No, that was last year. You're in grade 3 this year." It felt a little embarrassing now that I remember it, but what the hey!

Odd one out, here. We follow my husband's family tradition of: a homemade chocolate milk shake for each kid when they "pass" the year in school! Principal and teacher have a conference, and then inform the kids as to whether or not they passed (while laying out the milk shake ingredients, setting up the blender, etc.!). Then we all enjoy a yummy milk shake.
That's our tradition :)

That sounds fun Barbara!
Audrey: When someone asks ds what grade he's in, he always looks at me for the answer. :)

We mark the end of the year (end of May) and start claiming the next grade at that point, even though we don't really follow the grades as far as what we actually DO, and we school year round..... So end of May we go out to dinner to celebrate the end of the school year and DS gets to pick where we go. He loves that part. :p

My kids all know their grade. All of their activities and friends focus on grade level a lot. My kids get excited about moving up a grade. I'm not sure why exactly. The only thing I do is take my kids out for ice cream when they finish their math book. Its usually the last item of the year to finish and we do not move on unless its complete. They are excited about the treat. I'm happy we completed the book.
