For high school sciences our oldest son wants to study astronomy, biology, marine biology, and because he has to chemistry. He is not a mathy student, will not dissect.. Considered Apologia Physical Sci for 9th, but it has alot of earth sci which he'd rather not study alot of. (Please don't tell me this is not for 9th grade, both Abeka and BJU study physical sci for 9th and that's accepted just fine. :o)
He will use Apologia's Biology and then the Marine Biology. For Chemistry we'll probably use the Power Basics book along with Friendly Chemistry that I already have.
So... how does this sound??
9th Physical science: (would this be 1 physical as well as 1 physics?)
*The Geology book w/ study guide and extra worksheets 1/2 cr.
*The Astronomy Book w/ study guide and extra worksheets 1/2 cr.
*Power Basics Physics 1 cr.
(I would like to get together some labs also.)
10th Biology:
Apologia Biology 1 cr.
11th Chemistry:
Power Basics Chemistry with
Friendly Chemistry 1 cr. to 1.5 cr. (depends on time spent)
12th Marine Bio:
Apologia Marine Biology 1 cr.
Thanks!!

OK, see what others say, but this is how I have been told to handle this. Assuming 1 credit is one year, 9th grade is 1 credit of physical science. I'm not sure about adding a physics credit, physical science has quite a bit of intro. physics in it. Maybe if a lot of work is done, you can do a 1/2 credit of one of the other two, but I am thinking no on that. 10th-12th grades the same, 1 credit for each year. Any years that you don't do labs, call it Intro. (that means no labs on the transcript).
The only time I have seen taking 2 credits in a year is with a very accelerated student that is taking one whole course (ex: Biology) one semester (and finishing it), and another whole course the second semester.

:iagree: You will probably want to just give 1 credit for the Physical Science, and not a Physics credit. Physics is a pretty strenuous course on its own, requiring advanced math. I would, however, consider doing microscope work with the biology course, in order to get lab credit. The lab work gives application to the reading. Another idea is searching the web for videos of dissections, where he wouldn't have to do one, but could see a few done. Just a thought :001_smile: Here's a llink to one I found:

Blessings to you,

Blessings to you,
The Power Basics Physics is easier reading, but enough information for a high school level.
Thank you for reminding me about adding microscope work to Biology. Ds won a nice microscope for first prize in a science fair one year.
We did a trial run of a dissection online; after a few minutes, nope, doesn't want to watch one either.. I figured that I didn't dissect anything in high school, graduated with excellent grades, and am not any worse off for not having done so. :D

I would not give more than 1 credit per yr unless 2 completely different science credits were earned (like adv biology and adv chemisty taken simultaneously) or for college courses where 1 semester=1 high school credit.

I would only give 1 credit a year per course. I have seen the exception to this if the student does additional lab work for the course giving an extra 1/2 credit so for max of 1 1/2 credit per year. The only other exception to this would be if you did two full courses in one year.
