I want to enroll my 13 year old and 16 yo in an on line Latin course next year. This would be Latin I for high school.
Any recommendations?
Thanks!

I think Memoria Press has online courses in Latin, as well as other things, now, for both middle school and high school.

with these courses, I've heard a lot of good feedback on the Latin courses offered by Regina Coeli. Maybe someone whose dc are taking/have taken these classes will chime in.

My older sons are using Latin in the Christian Trivium and are learning a lot. We don't do it online, but they offer it.

My 13yo dd is enjoying the Scholars Online Latin I course. They cover half of the Wheelock's textbook in Latin I. It's a lot of work, but she likes it.

Ds is doing Latin 1 through Regina Coeli. It is a demanding course, but i love the level of support.
The course meets for two hours per week. It has an audio component so the student is hearing as well as reading Latin, and the audio component to the course allows the class to move faster than it does with just the written part.
The daily assignments are REALLY specific -- for example --
1) Listen to audio file twice
2) go through vocab cards X times
3) Take quiz (lots of quzzes, which is wonderful)
4) Do exercise .....
5) Repeat vocab orally
There is lots of drill, lots of support, and the multiple quizzes per week mean that I know that ds is not falling behind in any way.

I am glad to read your post, Gwen. I am planning on my rising 9th grader taking geo, bio, and French through RC next yr. I have only ever heard positive comments, but I wasn't sure about the level of support. Thanks for the info. :)

The Potter's School (http://www.pottersschool.com/) is wonderful. The instructor is Dave Spotts-an excellent teacher. He uses Lingua Latina in all of his classes.

I've heard good things about the Cambridge online course, but I haven't used it myself.

Hi Busy Bee,
The whole set up of Latin in the Christian Trivium really intrigues me. Your child took it online, right? Is Latin I of the Christian Trivium the equivalent of a high school year of Latin? I really like the small classes. The level of support seems very good!
What kind of computer set up do you need for the online class? Did you like the teacher? I'd love to know more.
Thanks!

Yes, my dd daughter took this class online. She did really well with it. She took it in 7th and 1/2 of 8th grade. Her teacher was Mary H. (one of the author's). Mary is very nice and is available for support. The level of support is excellent. Yes, it is my understanding that their Latin I is high school level equivalent.
They just started using headphones in January for their online classes. To tell you the truth I am not sure what exactly we had to download for the headphone. My husband is the computer person at our house. He set everything up for our dd.
I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, you can call them, they are very friendly and helpful.
Blessings!

I second The Potter's School with Mr. Spotts. Dd is in her second year and is really learning a lot. Great level of support. We're very happy with Lingua Latina.

Hi Busy Bee,
Is Latin I of the Christian Trivium the equivalent of a high school year of Latin?
It is my understanding that the first book and a section of the second book is equal to a high school year. This is information I read on their website. We use Latin in the Christian Trivium and I really appreciate the exercises and the wonderfully helpful authors.

I'm currently taking a LitCT online class for myself as a way of catching up with my dd who has taken Latin at co-op for the past 2 years. Mary isn't teaching my class, but I like the teacher. He has always answered my questions and is available by instant messenger or email between classes, if needed.
The way I understand the website, it says that they spread the grammar over 3 years instead of having it all in the first year of a typical high school course. So, one year of LitCT isn't equivalent to 1 year of HS Latin, but 3 years of LitCT is equivalent to 3 years of HS Latin. There is a 4th year of LitCT that is currently being reviewed by the University of California to determine credit (if I'm remembering correctly).
For the class, we do use headsets. My dh is the computer geek here, but I am the one who set up the headphones -- and correctly I might add! :D I just followed the instructions that came with the headphones -- easy! Our class has 3 students, and we take turns answering questions and going through the exercises. (I think 5 students was their max.)
I like it! We started in February '08, and so we're not far yet. Without the accountability of the class, I wouldn't be making as much time for Latin. I really want to be able to go back to teaching Latin at home in the fall.

Hi Christine and Profmom, I just got an email from Mary Harrington with the computer requirements and such. There's a way to visit a class, too. I'm really intrigued by the way it is all set up. It seems very student friendly. We need lots of hand holding.
I think that my 13 yo would probably get enough Latin from it that he could go to the local Christian classical high school in 9th grade, if that's what we wind up doing. My 16 yo has the luxury of being able to take the class for two years if he needs to, since he's at home for his high school years.
Oh, well, decisions, decisions....

Faith, Mary was great about answering my questions! I emailed twice with a bunch, and she was quick with long responses!

Faith, I am sorry that I misinformed you about the first year being high school level equivalent. I really thought that was right. After seeing everyone else's responses, I emailed Mary to ask her. She said that the first 2 vol.'s are equivalent to 2 yrs of high school latin. Ya know, I am learning not to rely on my memory any more. I am getting worse and worse. Again, I apologize.
Blessings!
