My dd8 has mild dyslexia. We just started vision therapy two weeks ago. Has anyone seen improvement in dyslexics with vision therapy? Also, has anyone used Addition the Fun Way to help learn math facts?

Thanks for your help!

My son has dyslexia. He had vision therapy a couple of years ago and it helped him so much. His reading improved at least a grade level in the 2 months he did the therapy.

The vision therapy helped, but working one-on-one every day on Reading was the key, I think.

He still has problems with spelling and English, but is reading great now.

He is left-handed, but right-eyed, so we do exercises for that and patch his dominate eye. I'm hoping once that's fixed he'll improve even more.

What do you mean by right-eyed?

Vision therapy helped my dyslexic son as well. However, I have to say that a major part of the therapy was reading for 20 minutes flipping various lenses in front of his eyes. It is quite possible that the daily oral reading had a lot to do with his progress.

ETA: He needed help beyond VT also. For example, after we finished VT, I did REWARDS Secondary with him. Prior to doing REWARDS, his reading tested at about a 4th/5th grade level (slightly above his grade level at the time). After REWARDS it tested at about an 8th-10th grade level (comprehension was at a 10th grade level).

My dd used Math Facts the Fun Way, Addition and Mult. She did very well w/ it. It's a good program.

Another option is to look at www.nild.net (http://www.nild.net)

I've been an educational therapist using Nild program for 12 years.

While your son may be helped by vision therapy, you should do it open-eyed, knowing that the research base is lacking. Other professionals typically will not refer to vision therapy for that reason.

Make sure that you don't put all your eggs in the vt basket. Continue implementing research-based teaching methods for dyslexia in reading instruction.

My dd did vision therapy from 6.5yo to 7yo. It did help her, but not as much as I had hoped it would. The biggest thing it did for her was to enable her to know what she had sounded out after she was done sounding out a word. Before VT, she could sound a word correctly, but she had worked so hard to retrieve the sounds that she couldn't remember what she had sounded out when she finished. If I sounded something out for her, even something with as many as 6 sounds, she could always blend the sounds together to make the word. If I gave her a word, even a word with as many as 6 sounds, she could always break it down into the sounds. However, if I gave her a two-letter word like "at" to sound out before VT, she would sound it out correctly and then was unable to tell me what the word was. After VT, she could tell me what the word was after she sounded it out and could do that for phonetically-regular basic-code words up to 5 sounds long. She still couldn't recognize any words on sight though. She had to sound them out every time.

The VT was the one who told me that I needed to get a dyslexia evaluation. She had expected to see a lot more progress than she did with my dd.

In addition to dyslexia, my ds has a tracking problem and a visual depth problem. VT has been a excellent at correcting those issues. He is tracking better, can see 3D for the first time, and his confidence is increasing. It hasn't improved his reading per say, but we do see a huge difference in the quality of his handwriting, the speed he completes other assignments like math, and in fine motor skills in general. It has been very worth the time for us.
