View Full Version : Lial Questions
What is the order of doing Lial's Math? I am seeing editions from 2 publishers, and titles that are very similar, including Algebra for College Students and College Algebra. What would I use after Saxon Algebra 1/2?
Is it fairly self directed like Saxon?
Also, if you use Lial's, what geometry program do you prefer? I would like one with a solutions manual, which I believe rules out Jacob's.
Thanks!

Margaret Lial has been a leading 'Math text' author for many years.
For high school maths I prefer her 'developmental' series. The texts are paperback--but very very good! Look for 7th or 8th editions. The student text is the minimum needed--but the solutions manual and DVTs (video lessons) are nice to have 'just in case'.
After Saxon Algebra 1/2 (Pre-Algebra) would be Algebra 1...
Here is the progression of the 'developmental' series:
Introductory Algebra (Algebra 1)
Geometry
Intermediate Algebra (Algebra 2)
College Algebra and Trig also known as Pre-Calc (same content different names).
Algebra for College students is a review of basic Algebra--for students who took Algebra 1 in school many years ago and need a refresher.
College Algebra can be considered 'Algebra 3' and is often paired with Trig to make a Pre-Calc course.
Lial's Geometry course is basic but a bit on the boring side--it is also difficult to find used at a good price since most community colleges do not offer Geometry. I'm using Jacobs with my online Geometry classes this year--but I'm sticking with Lial for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2.

Jann,
How do the Lial's Algebra 2 and Precalc compare to Chalkdust? Do both of them come with dvds just like Chalkdust?
I would like to know of Algebra 2 and Precalc. courses that aren't quite as rigorous as CD.
Thanks!
