I'll be taking an 8 hr car trip with my 13 & 18 yr sons shortly, and I'm looking for an audiobook for the trip.

The younger one will be studying early US History this fall, so something involving Native Americans or early explorers would be good. We're also open to suggestions of other classics, but two of us are not Sci Fi or fantasy fans.

Any ideas, ladies?

TIA,
Brenda

What about a Teaching Company audio course? Lots of history (and other) courses on sale, e.g. a 12 hour course on Lincoln and Rhetoric ($35 audio download). You can also get Teaching Co CD sets on ebay fairly cheap.

Audible.com has downloadable audio courses from The Modern Scholar, for $15 or less depending on the membership plan (you can load them on an iPod or cut them to CD to listen in the car). Just search under "Modern Scholar" or look in the History section:

I'm listening to Swiss Family Robinson from Librivox.org (http://librivox.org/) and it's wonderful!

Around the World in Eighty Days is also excellent. It starts out a bit slow (intentionally) and as the story progresses it gets more and more exciting.

Both are great stories about traveling and adventure.

Don't Know Much About US History audio CD is pretty good.

James Fennimore Cooper, like Last of the Mohicans,

Kenneth Roberts, Rabble in Arms, Arundel,Northwest Passage

Trying to pick books my boys enjoyed at those ages.

since you have an 18 yo as well, this audio book (http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/entry/offers/partnerPromotions.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&productID=BK_AREN_000298) about Thomas Jefferson (by Joyce Appleby) and the politics of the day is interesting.

It depends on the mood of the moment and whether you want it to be for serious thought or entertainment.

I can't say I agree with everything Appleby has to say but there is food for thought. SWB recommended her book Telling the Truth about History.
