I'm almost sure I know the answer to this, but just checking.

A boy who was 13 last week, would be about to go into grade 8, and would not start High School until the next academic year?

so grade 8 2009/10
High school year 1 (of 4) 2010/11
High School year 2 (of 4) 2011/12

etc.

Am I correct?

Thank you

willow.

Thank you, it helps so much when buying curriculum from the US. :D

Honestly, I just went by what age I was at each grade level. I have a January birthday so when I turned 14, I was in 8th grade, age 17, 11th grade, then went to college.(I didn't do a senior year of high school) My summer birthday son was a little tricky but I gave him a choice, do you want to go to CC at age 18, he said no, then regretted it and had to do high school at home. He took a couple of CC classes in spring but was stuck here with me.:tongue_smilie: Now my friends are totally different. Most of their kids are a year ahead of what I would do, some of them even 2. I just have a "what's the rush" philosophy and I really enjoy homeschooling. What else would I do with my college degree? Oh, and I asked my dh who the youngest person was in our class and he said it was his former girlfriend who turned 17 in October when she was a senior. He was one year older with an October birthday. Clear as mud?......

I'm not an American and I also do not live in the country of my birth (or even the same hemisphere!) This means I am culturally from one country, living in a second one and buying curriculum from a third. ;) In maths and things it hardly matters, we just carry on with the next lesson, the next book etc, but for some things I need to know if we are High School yet.

As for graduation, I guess we'll stop when we get there...around 18 years or so.

late birthday. Our Dd was born in June and we started her in Kindergarten at 5 she just turned five, I wish I had not done that, but instead we held her back last year, so she would be up to pare this year. To me it is the child's maturity on what grade they are in.
sorry if this did not make sense, it is 5 am.

There's actually a large variety of ages in each class. In dd's 8th grade last year, the ages ranged from 13 to 15. My younger dd, who turns 13 in October, will be in 7th.

I wouldn't recommend buying curriculum based simply on age. Many of the curriculum providers have a diagnostic test to see where the child should start. If the curriculum you are looking at has one, that would be best. If they don't, you can always try another curriculum's test just to get a feel for where he is.

The standard in FL is they start 1st grade if they're 6yo by Sept 1st. My ds is a Jan b'day & turned 14 during 8th grade. Many parents "red shirt" their dc, esp. boys if they have summer b'days making them 19 when they graduate hs.
