I am starting a writing curriculum with my dd(9) who has high functioning autism. I was planning on using Writing with Ease 1. I know she is going to have a difficult time with narrations...but I figured we could work our way through them anyways and hopefully see some improvement. Is there another writing curriculum that would be good for someone with high functioning autism?

IEW can be very successful with those on the autistic spectrum including Asperger's Syndrome and HFA.
I haven't looked at WWE yet but it seems like it might be a good program as long as you work at his pace.

Thanks Madamom,
I have looked into IEW before but I was confused as to what to purchase. What would I need to order for her. This will be our first year starting formal writing instruction other than copywork. Is IEW very hard to teach?
Thanks again!

The TWSS materials - DVDs & outline - teach YOU how to teach the program.
The SWI series with DVDs teaches the kids a good portion of what is taught in TWSS. But it's a recording of Andrew giving the class to a group of kids, those classes are 2 days i think. You don't do it over 2 days like them though.
You have to decide if you want to learn to teach it, or have him do it. The TWSS would "last longer" because you have learned all parts of the program, and know now how to teach it to all your kids at various levels.
The themed lesson plans they sell all assume that you have gone thru TWSS (i think) and you just use those instead of the SWI one.
Does that help at all?
We have the combo - teach me AND teach her! LOL!!

Thanks Tracey,
I think I would get the TWSS and SWI if I did IEW just to make sure I have all my bases covered. I am still confused about the program though. I see on the website it is recommended for 3-5 grade...right now my daughter is functioning on a 1st grade level. I am also confused how assignments are made/scheduled. I guess the TWSS teaches me how to do this. I kind of liked my Writing With Ease workbook that I could pull out and know exactly what we had to do each day. They need to come out with a IEW for dummies...lol:tongue_smilie:.

With her working at a 1st grade level, i'd probably either WAIT, or just go thru TWSS yourself before investing in SWI also. Then you can start implementing parts of it as she progresses.
One thing to keep in mind is that they offer a 100% money back guarantee if you buy from them. Without a time limit!
If you join IEW Families on yahoo, there are a variety of lesson plans you can check out. They tell you - watch from this time to this time, do this.
BUT, i'm not sure that SWI-A is the right level for her if she is about at my middle childs level or a bit lower. I wouldn't put her in it - she is making her way thru BJU 2nd and there is a lot of hand holding for writing, she dictates to me a lot too because she can't write that much. She will dictate a full page story, but only write 1-2 sentences herself.
So what i'm trying to say is.... i think that IEW as it stands is probably going to be a bit much for her. Do you know anyone with it locally and could borrow the disks? There are some videos i think on YouTube that might help too.
