Some background: My boys, now ages 9 and 10, were tested about a year ago by a neuropsychologist. The testing happened by my request through their regular doctor. The doctor put on the referral that the reason for testing was "Academic Difficulty" because I expressed that my boys just couldn't seem to 'get' reading.

The testing took place in about 2-3 hours for each of them. They were both diagnosed with the same thing: Dyseidetic dyslexia.

My question now is this: It seems from reading here on this board, many of your children have had very extensive testing ranging from 6 hours to a few days.

I want to have further testing done for the boys to see about: OCD/anxiety issues, ADHD and Spectrum disorders.

I'm not quite sure how I should go about resquesting more testing. Is it typical for the parent to tell the neuropsych. what they want their child tested for? Or is it more typical that the neuropsych would just do extensive testing?

I know when they went for their testing there was an "initial" interview with me and the boys to discuss what I was seeing academically. Plus, I filled out the copious questionnaires. From those parent-answered questionnaires, there were dx of ADHD in 9yo and ODD and PDD in 10yo. However, these things were never discussed with me. I wasn't sure if that was because the np just didn't see it or what??? I see ADHD as being a potential issue for 9yo and I also see ODD and/or PDD (Aspergers?) for 10yo.

So, tell me how you've done it. I will probably go through their regular doctor again, just to help things along. I feel like I need to make sure I have it all figured out even before I get there.

Yes, just take in a list of symtpoms that you feel are "red flags".. Tell your regular doctor that you would like to do further testing to rule out any autism spectrum disorders and some other issues that you may have noticed. Tell the doctor that you will not be of sound mind until you have ruled these out for sure.

Then when you get to the psychologist, tell her the same thing. Be sure to take a list of symptoms with you to both doctors.

Good luck!

Can you call the np and ask for further evals? My 3 yr old was tested to get a baseline (long story), anyway, the np said that we could just call her anytime if we thought there was an issue. It may be that you need another referral, but the np may be able to bring them back for more testing without messing with the ped again. It doesn't hurt to ask.
