I am just finishing this book. I really like it. It seems like the How to Talk so Kids Will Listen... for intense kids. Any one work on the strategies in the book with their difficult kid?

i like the book a lot. it helped me deal with some of the roughest times in our life. it gave me a lot of courage and faith. i think the author is brilliant and realistic.

the basket a,b,c system helped me explain to my dh how we needed to deal with our ds at the time. the basket sytem helped get my dh on board in changing the way we were communicating and behaving with ds. at the time, the basket system was the only thing i could get my dh to understand.

i was grateful for the book bec. it helped me keep my cool in chaotic situations. it served as a great primer for our next step in dealing with ds,
the methods used in Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach.

The Transforming book is what really helped us begin to change our homelife, but i don't know if we could have learned from it without reading the Explosive Child book first.

Thanks for replying! That's really interesting, because I read 1/3 of Transforming the Difficult Child this past Fall. I implemented a points system and had some success, but I found it difficult to keep up with the first step of listening to your child. It seems the Explosive Child really gives concrete information to making a parent truly understand how to approach listening, responding, empathizing, and problem solving. I can understand how the books really do complement each other. Maybe in a month or so of implementing and digesting and becoming the parent I wan to be through the Explosive Child I will go back to the Transforming book.

Did you use the workbook for Transforming the Difficult Child? I was looking, online at the book when I saw that there was a corresponding workbook and was wondering if it would be beneficial to have both.

Thanks!

The Explosive Child was a great help for us last winter. I don't have a copy of it on hand but, yes, triage worked for us. I need to reread it as when my celiac ds gets "glutened" his meltdowns return and I guess I have lost a little of that knowledge...

I totally agree. Those are the 2 books that helped us very much.

I am now on my way out to buy that book! I've read The Challenging Child, Positive Discipline, How to Talk So Your Kids Will Listen, From Difficult to Delightful in 30 Days (Do not recommend unless you want to read a litany of whining about how ADHD is NOT REAL and is really just a parental problem), etc., etc.

From what you say it sounds like Explosive Child is more than just a pep talk or a lecture, so I am in! Thanks for the tip!

i've used some of the techniques. They work. I realized that I needed to show my kid respect if I wanted respect. Made me open my eyes about things. The book was well worth the money. It's one meant to be read over again and studied I think.

I am praying for a homeschool year that will be less explosive :) Last year we lost so much time redirecting the behavior of my youngest and most "explosive" daughter. I am looking foward to getting some helpful info from the book. Thanks for the post. I had never heard of the book until now. I read "The Strong Willed Child" which was packed full of great stories that assured me that I was not alone in my struggles but it did not contain much practical advice. I have also read "How to Make Your Child Mind Without Losing Yours"---again OK but not the best practical advice.

I'm listening to audio CD "Calming the Chaos" by Jim Fay and Charles Fay, PHD, borrowed from a library. One or both of them are the "Love and Logic" guys. There are some very practical tips that work with the Explosive Child triage technique. I may check out Love and Logic if I can borrow from a library.
I oly foud one other reference to these guys in the FOrums here so I thought I'd mention.
