I just heard a story on the CA case on All Things Considered on NPR. For those of you on the West Coast you can probably still catch it live..otherwise here is the link to listen online.

Just caught this on All Things Considered and it made me cringe. On the one hand, I thought the coverage was objective. On the other, did they have to highlight a homeschooling family whose children are sitting around playing a game during school hours, and whose mother doesn't sound like a particularly bright bulb? (So sorry if someone here knows her, but that's how she came across to me.) Don't get me wrong; I absolutely concur that children can learn all kinds of skills from playing games. I just don't want that to be the sole sound byte, if you kwim. Between that and the reference to neglect/abuse (re the family involved in this particular case), well...I wouldn't blame listeners for forming a negative opinion of homeschooling in response.

the reporter/narrator says that the ruling will not go into effect in 30 days because it will be appealed. Who is doing this and how do we find out more about it? (And may I say that I'm not thrilled that this issue is coming up in this way, at this time, in that state...)

From what I gather from the various lists, the legal volunteers of all the big homeschool groups in California are working on this, along with the HSLDA. The Pacific Justice Institute is representing the charter school that the family belonged to. I have just followed all this info from the HomeSchool Association of California email list on which one of the HSC lawyers is posting updates and answering questions. There have also been TV reports and an article in today's SF Chronicle.

BTW, Colleen, I do know the family that was featured on NPR.
