How do you deal with spelling mistakes when your child is writing out the story?

Hi Beth,

Wait until your child is finished writing the story. Then when you are editing the story, that would be the time to correct them.

The writing process is a language process, and completely different from the part of the brain that is involved in spelling. When your child is actually writing the story, they are supposed to be thinking about putting words together into well-constructed sentences. You don't want to interrupt that process then to make them think about the mechanics. Better to call their attention to those things later.

Also, this is why I included the spelling pages in the workbooks. Have your child take the words they misspelled and practice them on those spelling pages. This provides another time to work on the mechanics.
