I've looked at the syllabus on Dr. Callahan's site. The early weeks seem to do just a few lessons in the book:
Week 3: Chapter 2, lessons 1-2
Week 4: Chapter 2, lessons 3-4
Week 5: Chapter 2, lessons 5-6; Ch. 2 algebra review

But some of the later weeks have a lot more lessons:
Week 12: Chapter 6, lessons 1-6; Ch. 6 algebra review
Week 19: Ch. 11, lessons 1-7; Ch. 11 algebra review

Is this due to the relative difficulty/importance of these lessons? Did anyone follow the syllabus - if so, did it make sense when you were doing it?

I'm not familiar with the syllabus you name, but I can give you a comparison.

Are you using the third edition of Jacob's? If so, the syllabus you mentioned moves at a slower pace than does Laura Berquist's/MODG's. In MODG's, week covers ch. 2, lessons 3-6 plus Summary & Review. By week 12 students do ch. 7, lessons 2-6. I have noticed that some lessons are done over two days, but not in the first three chapters. In the first twelve weeks only two lessons from chapter 4, one lesson from chapter 6 and one lessons from chapter 7 are spread over two days.

I would write to Dr. Callahan about that. It does seem odd to me too.
By the way, I once wrote to Harold Jacobs to ask him how many problems he thought a student should do in each lesson, and he sent me a list of each lesson & the problems he would assign, for a "regular" class and an "honors" class. If anybody wants a look at it, I could try to find it and email it to you.

I saved the post that hswarden mentioned, so I know I can get my hands on it. I'm using it right now. My dd just started Geometry two weeks ago.

I'd love to have that, because that's another question I have about the text.

Is it on the forums?

I'd like a copy also as we're doing Jacob's Geometry in the Fall.

Knowing how many problems to assign is always my biggest challenge.

Wow! Thank you so much! I've always had my children do every problem. My dd who is half-way through the text will also thank you when she hears that she doesn't have to do every problem.

Thanks, Angie! Anyone know of a similar list for Jacob's Algebra?

For Jacobs Algebra, you do set 1 and then either set 2 or set 3. Sets 2 and 3 have the exact same types of problems. They just use different numbers. I always assigned sets 1 and 3 because it annoyed me to have to check the answers to the set 2 problems in the back of the student text. I didn't like flipping back and forth.

The reason he has two sets that are virtually identical (except for the numbers used in the problems) is so you have a whole other set of problems you can assign if your student is having difficulty with the lesson.

The set 4 problems are extra credit.

Thanks! That is very helpful :)

Thanks Angie. My dd has been doing every problem in all three sets. She will be thrilled to cut back some.

Thanks Angie! I don't know what I would do without all the help I find here on the WTM boards.

Someone posted a suggested problem list for Jacobs Geometry. Is this for the 2nd or 3rd edition?

Thanks,
Karen
