When I was at a movie yesterday with my girls, there was a preview from Fathom Events (http://www.ncm.com/Fathom/), which hosts many of the operas and other special concerts that some of us in more out-of-the-way places cannot easily attend.

Anyway, coming soon to a theater near you, you may be able to watch "The Magic Flute" or "The Barber of Seville" by the Met. You simply click on the event, type in your zip code, and it will bring up the nearest theater, date, and time at which you can watch one of these great operas.

I really think I'm going to try to make it to "The Magic Flute". I've listened to it on CD many times, but would love to watch it actually performed, and since a trip to the Met in NYC most likely isn't going to happen for me anytime soon, this will be the next best thing.

Enjoy! :D

Thanks! I've never seen either of those. In fact, I've never even seen a Mozart opera--I've only seen Romantic ones.

Hi Michelle!!!

Hope you and the family are having a great summer! Thanks for the info on the opera...I still remember going to the free dress rehearsal of LaTraviata with you and how much fun it was!

Will definitely have to check out the Met!

Keep in touch :D

I miss you, Kirsten! I remember La Traviata as well! My girls were amazed at the way the singers kept falling all over the floor. I remember how well your kids paid attention.

I'll send you a PM or an e-mail soon, OK?

:grouphug: again!

The production of The Magic Flute that they'll be showing is actually from 2-3 years ago and was shown on public television some time ago. It's performed in English, and has really colorful, imaginative costumes... My children absolutely loved it, and I think it's a great introduction to opera. Our recording was destroyed, so we were so excited to see that it was coming to theaters again! I'm sure the big-screen event would be wonderful.

But I also discovered that while tickets to see it at theaters are $15 each (at least in our area -- perhaps it varies?), the dvd is now (finally! I've checked many times!) available at the Met Opera Shop and through a secondary seller at Amazon for $25. Great as it would be to see on the large screen, I opted for the dvd this time...

Anyway, my kids are younger than high school age, and I'm just a lurker over here, but I had to comment 'cause we'd enjoyed it so much. For anyone with early elementary children considering this, my kids had been introduced to the plot and music through the Classical Kids CD (I think it's Mozart's Magic Flute?) that follows a contemporary girl who steps into the story... I think having had that exposure really whetted their appetites for the full opera.

I've seen that opera live 3 times, but not at the met. The very first time was in CA when I was 9, and it's the very last opera I've seen live, too, since live opera is totally out of our budget. Even $15 a ticket is steep for us this summer. Perhaps the DVD is available through our library network.

through the Classical Kids CD series. I had not realized it was also available on DVD---great news!

I think because the costumes are so great, and because of the music and plot, The Magic Flute is a great first opera for many kids---and adults too!

I haven't used these myself but I wanted to make sure that ya'll knew about these educator's guides. It looks like they don't have one for either of the summer's encore performances but you might find others that are helpful if you fall in love with The Met and want to see more DVD's or live performances.

And here's a link to the 09/10 season press release which includes dates for upcoming Live HD transmissions to movie theaters. I should probably note that dh works for the Met so I guess this post probably moves me over in the direction of being an advertiser here. :001_smile: But we have fallen in love with the opera around here over the last two years and we too are looking forward to this season's offerings.

Have fun!
