I was all set to use Henle for my ds, 13, with its study guides, quizzes, and tests, then made a last minute curriculum switch to Galore Park So You Want to Learn Latin, year 1. I've searched the boards and the Galore Park group, and can't find much info. on how to use it. It looks like people just do the exercises in the book and study the vocabulary. Is that it? Any quizzing needed?

TIA,

Mary

We just did the exercises and studied the vocabulary and grammar. I made up my own tests using the exercises in the book. One problem with the program, IMO, is that it doesn't have any additional materials associated with it. It is very logically laid out but it goes very quickly. Latin Prep is more gentle and has more support materials but I didn't find it to be as logically laid out.

What we do as an addition to Latin Prep, and will continue to do with SY Latin, is to set up a concertina/accordian file with one pocket for each day of the month. Every time Calvin has something new to learn, we make a note on a file card (it might say Latin Prep 1, p. 42, 2nd Conjugation verbs). If he comes across the information on 1st August, then it goes into pocket 2, for review on 2nd August, then 3rd August, 10th August, then it stays in that pocket indefinitely for continual review. So basically there is review after one day, one week, then monthly.

You could set this system up to refer to particular flash cards, if that's what you use. There are also books of extra exercises (http://www.galorepark.co.uk/product/parents/994/latin-practice-exercises-level-1.html) that you could use. They don't line up exactly with SY Latin, but they should be usable.

Best wishes

For my 15yo, we will be working through SYRWTLL. We will work together 3x/wk going over the lesson, drilling vocab and declension/conjugation information. He will be responsible on the days in between to do the exercise work in the text which we will correct/review at the start of our next 'class' time together. My plan with him is to cover 1 chapter every 2 weeks. I will make up tests/quizzes for him to take at the end of the chapter. Also, I purchased the Latin Translations book that coordinates with this and he will work through a chapter of translations after he has learned the material in the main text.

We will see how this works in the real world. ; ) My son has had a year of Latin Road so we may move more quickly through the first chapters since it will be more review than anything else; but looking ahead in the book, I see chapters 4 -10 introduce new material that he has not already covered and so my 1 chapter every other week should give us enough time.

Oh, I also plan to have him make up vocab cards to drill his vocabulary. I was planning on following the method of Latin Road and making them color coded (ie pink for feminine nouns, blue for masculine, yellow for neuter. . etc)

That's similar to what we did--he did the exercises, we reviewed vocabulary and declensions three x/week together and I checked over the exercises...we color coded the cards, too...I'm just compulsive that way...
