I will start writing my dissertation soon. Will I have to get my dissertation published once I am done? How will I get it published? Any input will be highly appreciated.

Whether your dissertation can/will be published really depends on you and your department chair. When I went through this, my department treated the dissertation separately from being published. However, the work itself had to be publishable, if that makes sense. The topic had to be relevant, the study rigorous, the statistics flawless, and the conclusion had to bring new light to the subject matter (not just a repeat of other studies).

Most dissertations, because of their size, get reduced into several smaller studies for publication. You can submit your dissertation to peer reviewed journals (and they have directions for how to do this in their journals). After that, the process usually takes a few months. Usually, your submission will be reviewed by about five peers in the area, changes/edits made, resubmitted back to you for corrections/edits, resubmitted by you, and then a final determination made about publication. After that, it depends on the backlog of articles they have to print, but you could see your article published within about a year.

If you plan to get a job in academia it is usually advisable to try and publish your dissertation. Most academic jobs in higher ed require you to publish several times/year (it's part of the yearly evaluation process that leads to tenure). Also, publishing your dissertation helps get your name out in your field of study, which will help when you apply for jobs in academia.

You may get your dissertation published if you choose to do so. You will have to first decide what sort of publication you are interested in. You will also have to own the copyright. You will find a blog post here with all the details that how you may get it published. I hope it will help you. Good Luck!!
