How do you schedule this? Is it done every day? Could you alternate with the poetry, or would that too much?

Thanks!

My 7th grader is working thru this slowly as she has another writing class to deal with (although I really like this one better).

There are schedule suggestions in the book. I go for a 4 day/wk schedule as that's how the work book breaks it down. We try to do one lesson or model per week but it does sometimes stretch to two weeks.... doing the grammar and workbook one week and the paper the next week.

I plan to do 1/2 of Homer in 5th/6th grade (we just started it in Jan of this year) and to finish the other 1/2 in 6th or so; then do 1/2 Homer B in 6th and 7th because I don't want to get to Diogenes before 8th grade.

As far as daily scheduling, we do one week of the Analysis/Grammar,etc 4 days a week one week, then the Writing Project part over 4 days in the next week.

I'll also throw some Poetry in there starting next year in 6th grade.

I wanted to get this in the next couple of weeks. I like the looks of the poetry as well, but didn't want to load to much on ds.

Thanks!

You should also note that each of the workbooks are only about a 1/3 of a year, I think (if you do one model per week).... so some fill in the year with one of the poetry books.

I started Homer this year. I dont know if I do it "right" but this is what I do:

Mon, we read the model, discuss it as instructed in the TM

Tues, we do the parsing and sentence diagramming. I know this is different because the 2 are broken up on diferent days. But, doing the sentence work together is easier and makes more sense to us.

Wed we do vocab and dictation plus any other writing problems we have not completed

Thurs is dedicated to rewriting the model and first edit.

Fri we edit and do a final copy.

Now, that is on a "good" week. We have taken 2 weeks for a more complicated model. Sometimes a grammar lesson will need additional time. Or sometimes we are starting a new step and need more time to work with it. Sometimes, the model has more complicated scenes and needs more time to work through. Sometimes there is no good reason, we just need more time to digest the material and work more slowly. Make the schedule work for your family. Some lessons can easily be done in a week. Some need 2.

I plan on using Beginning Poetry next year. Youngest dd will finish Aesop A this year. I want to do the Poetry with her next year. I am hoping my oldest can work along either before starting Homer B or after. I too, do not want to hit Diogennes too early. I need to learn how to spell it first!! :p

We're doing CW Homer A and Beginning Poetry A this year. We started off the year with Homer preparation and then weeks 1-10. Then we did all 12 lessons of Beg Poetry A. After spring break, we will start back with Homer Lesson 11 and finish with Lesson 20 the first week of June. This is the suggested schedule by CW. I schedule 1 lesson per week for the CW series. I found that we need all 5 days for the Homer A writing projects starting in lesson 5; however, we only need to do Beg Poetry A 4 days a week.

What did you do for "Homer preparation" Beth?

My CW is on its way, but reading this, I was just wondering how long you spend on it on any single day. So far we do 45min. a day of LA. Will we have to bump that up?

I looked at the sample pages and didn't notice that. I was thinking of purchasing JAG and doing that along with CW.

Nevermind, I was looking at the poetry sample and ds was talking to me!

Homer Preparation week is actually set up as Week 0 in the student workbook and IG. This week is designed to prepare the grammar terms & copywork notebook (they recommend a vocuabulary notebook too, but we don't do this one) and review basic grammar. This is also a week for teacher preparation and specific pages in the Homer core book are assigned to read each day.

I schedule an hour each day for CW. Mondays are shorter because it's mostly read aloud and oral discussion. Thursdays and Fridays usually take the whole time because the boys are actually writing (or typing) their narrations. I think CW recommends 2 sessions a day for 30-45 minutes each, but I only have one teaching time set up.
