We are using Galore Park So You Really Want to Learn History 1 for my twelve year old . She is also enjoying LL British Medieval Literature. It fits perfectly with her history text.
With my son we are reading 'Our Island Story' by H E Marshall as a spine and then using historical fiction to supplement. I don't require any writing from him. We read extensively, discuss things and sometimes do associated crafts.
Here is a link to an excellent book list on British history (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/thebookworm/british_history.htm) for your children's age range which I use with my son.

You might find this site helpful. It is for the British Museum. There is a section for "on-line tours" that covers several different periods/countries. Britain, Rome, Egypt, Americas, Japan, Europe, etc.
Hope this helps some.

You could try The Book Depository (http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/WEBSITE/WWW/WEBPAGES/homepage.php)
It is a UK book seller but the postage is free to the USA.
You can get 'Our Island Story' online for free (both e-book (http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=marshall&book=island&story=_contents) and audio book (http://librivox.org/our-island-story-part-1-by-he-marshall/)).
You may also find that many of the literature suggestions are cheaper in the USA and you can get them at Amazon. Ambleside Online (http://amblesideonline.org/index.shtml) also have some good links to downloadable books.

An Island Story is available at Lulu.com, or you can read it online for free at www.mainlesson.com :)

Written at a middle school level is The Young Oxford History of Great Britain and Ireland (http://www.amazon.com/Young-Oxford-History-Britain-Ireland/dp/0199100357)
It's still very readable, but not as story-like as Our Island Story. There are some fairly cheap second-hand copies on Amazon. Unlike OIS, it covers the 20th Century.
