Saxon 8/7 vs. Alg 1/2

I've heard that the newer edition (paperback version) of Saxon 8/7 is more challenging than the hardback edition of Algebra 1/2. Does anyone have experience with either or both of these texts?

From my understanding you can skip Algebra 1/2 with the newer version. It has been included in the 8/7 text. The newer 1/2 is for children that need extra work before moving into Algebra.

When we were using Saxon, this was my understanding too; skip Algebra 1/2 if you're using the newer edition and skip 8/7 if you're using the old edition. You only did both books if your child was not ready for Algebra.
