I just put lots of French audiolivres on, and Peterson's birdsong tutorial. What else? Anything free to learn German? It is an ipod classic, given to me for my birthday by my husband so I can listen to French in the car as I chauffer teenagers. I wish I'd had it last year. Last year was a very heavy driving year. I'm especially looking for free things, but I'm willing to pay for some unfree ones, especially if they would appeal to other family members as well. I can also tell you that I HATE the help available for itunes. It is very, very badly done. They seem to assume one is only going to use the ipod their way and that that way is so intuitive that it doesn't need directions, and bury anything else deep down without instructions, if they let one get to it at all. Typical, typical Apple. Grrrr. At least that has been my impression so far. I kludged my way through downloading audio files off the internet, but there has got to be a better way.

Nan,

Where'd you find the French audiobooks? I'd love to find some children's audiobooks in French. Librivox has a few, but any other sources?

Thanks,
yvonne

http://www.litteratureaudio.com/

We got French CDs and tapes at the French library. This site has some Perrault, Verne, Grimm, and some others. I forgot about Librivox. I'll have to go investigate.

Nan, you probably already know this, but The Teaching Company has audio downloads now, which are generally less expensive than either the DVD or CD format. For example, Shakespeare's Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies (http://www.teach12.com/ttcx/CourseDescLong2.aspx?cid=280) by Peter Saccio is available for $49.95 via audio download, as compared to $69.95 for CD.

I know that the Association of Classical and Christian schools also has their seminars recorded via MP3, and hopefully the Circe Institute and others will follow suit.

Nan--I find that I enjoy my iPod for all the CD programs I never got around to actually listening to with as much intensity as I should. So, first I copied all my "shelf" programs to a digital copy for my iPod--on music, on astronomy, on periods of history.

I have subscribed to many podcasts for science (NPR's Science Friday is very nice, as well as Ecogeeks and 60 second Science) and math (The Math Factor and Math Mutation), and use them frequently in my classroom, or just as dinner table conversation. Nothing like a 60-second podcast to make you feel smart! GRIN.

When my DH bought me my iPod, he figured I'd never use it (because I've fallen into an exercising slub, and he sees an iPod as an "exercise toy"), and yet I use mine every single day. It was a great investment for me.

Hope you enjoy yours!

When you have the time browse through the Podcasts. Librivox.org (http://librivox.org/) has free public domain audio books. Also, The Teaching Company has free lectures available, you have to have an account to see them I think. I love to listen to Peter Kreeft's lectures (http://www.peterkreeft.com/audio.htm). Learn Out Loud (http://www.learnoutloud.com/Free-Audio-Video) has free and low cost audio available.

Can I put on a bunch of archived science fridays to listen to while we are sailing? So far it has been great; I listened to La Belle et La Bete while I varnished the dinghey. And I just discovered that iTunes has iUniversity (or something like that) with free courseware. Unfortunately, all the TC tapes we have are tapes because we find these easier to use.

In Our Time podcasts. They release each weeks broadcast as an mp3, but I have to do all kinds of tricks to get the archives on my mp3 player. They're worth it.

You can find some free downloads from the ACCS conferences at WordMP3.com (http://www.wordmp3.com/).
