Is it scary? I haven't read the books, so I really don't know what it is about.
Thanks,

Well.... define scary?
I guess I'd say yes... creepy old house, and by the end kids are fighting hordes of CGI trolls and such--both with a sword and by throwing tomato sauce at them (yes, apparently it is deadly to trolls).
My boys (4 & 6) loved it, but anything with fighting and monsters is right up thier alley. If I was 9 again, it would have been my favorite movie of the year!

We liked it BUT, my son had read all the books so he knew somewhat what to expect. The part I really thought was going to mess with my kids heads...(i didn't read the books) was a part involving the children's father. My son knew the premise and said it before anything traumatic happened but I would gauge whether your kids get spooked easily. My son normally does but since he had already read the books he was prepared. My dd doesn't get too frightened about anything. It could be a little scary. But, honestly, I think if you do nothing more than talk about it and read a book or watch something happy (video tv) later it will be okay.
HTH....Hope I didn't confuse you more....

it has some scary parts but my son (14) and i were delightfully surprised by how wonderful this movie was. he didn't want to go because he remembered the books being 'for kids' but this movie really does appeal to the child in all of us.

DD, 11, did not find it too scarey--just about right, she thought. And I would say that she was pretty sensitive up through age 9, but then became pretty impervious. I would have taken her before age 9, but would have insisted on reading and digesting the books first so that she knew about the two scarey parts and how they turn out.

My dh took the boys (9 and 6 1/2) to see it. They had both read all of the books and knew the story. They loved it and said it was not too scary. I was wondering if it might be for the younger one, but it wasn't. They all enjoyed it.

I thought it was a little scary, but I scare easily, LOL. All the kids who were there found it delightful (it was fun)..... I wasn't familiar with the books, either......
