I am still on the fence about science. When I originally started planning it, I was intending for DH to be doing the science since he is a scientist. However, this is not working out so well. Doing it the WTM way is great, however, I need something already done for me, not something I have to dig around for, KWIM?

I have one going in to 5th next year and one going in to 2nd. I realize I probably cannot combine them a great deal with this anymore.

So, I am down to deciding between Singapore Science (oohh, but which one and what do I get with it) and using Prentice Hall Science Explorers (and what to get with this as well).

Has anyone viewed/used both of these that can give me a comparison with pros and cons for each please???

And what to do with my (soon to be a) 2nd grader? He is very intuitive. He mostly likes reading about subjects rather than the workbooks (ie he just asked for a super thick book on zoology to study for science -- this was after I showed him samples of the Singapore stuff -- he didn't like them at all!) He reads the Usborne World History Encyclopedia for fun, for example.

I am narrowing it down, but still on the fence in this area. thanks!

Just to throw another one out there -- have you considered CyberEd's Plato Science for an independent, computer-based option for your 5th grader? We are using Physical Science, and it is wonderful! You can see demos at the FAQ CyberEd page at Homeschool Buyer's Co-op.

GAH!! You are confusing me -- LOL! I have not even heard of that. I will take a peek though. Thanks! (this has been a huge thorn in my side lately)

What area of science to you want to cover? What have you covered in the past? That would determine what I would recommend.

We have done the 1st cycle ala-WTM (1st: bio., 2nd: earth/astro.; 3rd: chem., currently physics and Ponds unit from My World Science).

My current 1st grader has just been folded in thus far with the above. I don't have a problem separating them for the next phase. Nor do I have a problem with breaking from the 4 year WTM cycle through for the logic phase either. I am just wanting to get something decided on once and for all!

Ok, so I am fairly certain that I will go with Singapore. Which way to go with SIngapore for 5th grader? Any advice on that?

Melissa,

I have a 5th grader and a 2nd grader this year. We've been using Singapore MPH 5. My dd (2nd grader) joins right in and has had no problems. I do work more closely with her, but she's enjoyed the program and asks for it constantly. I plan to move on to MPH 6 next year with both kids.

I'm not sure if that helps you much since it seems you're leaning towards doing something different with your younger child, but I thought I'd chime in.

This helps a great deal. I just was not sure if I needed to have them separate at this point or not. Thanks so much for chiming in. Greatly appreciated.
