How can I choose an Avatar?

I would really like to have one, since I enjoy seeing people's photos and avatars, but am having difficulty choosing just ONE. Also, I don't know how to upload an avatar, although there may be directions somewhere. I'm not one for having one favourite in anything or just one interest. As for photos, I've considered putting up a baby photo or something, or something from when I was much younger and looked better in photos than I did IRL. Now I hope and pray that I look better IRL than in my photos, lol. Especially that I look friendlier and better than I do in my passport photo.

Also, I'm not very comfortable using emoticons, but do you think it would help if I used them more?

Well...when you do choose something, you can change it as often as you like:) That's the good part:)
