Sorry. I think of new questions after my old thread is buried!!

How do you place your child? Grade level?

dd7 is 1/2 through with 2nd grade. Should I go ahead and start 2nd grade? Or wait and start 3rd grade? She excels in everything except Math. She reads at least 4th grade level. (I haven't evaluated her yet this year.)

I "tested" her on the 1-2 grade list in Natural Speller and she got every one right.

Thanks for the help!

I keep my boys on grade level with R&S spelling. The spelling words are not necessarily challenging to them (they have a natural spelling tendency), but I think the continued exercises in phonics, building words, and dictionary skills are valuable. In addition, the spelling program complements the grammar program, so the similiar skills and/or ideas are being covered by both subjects.

The 7th & 8th grade spelling books move to more of a vocabulary program focusing on Latin and Greek roots. I think this is important preparation for high school, so I don't want to get there too early.

HTH!

is very average-- not real challenging. I would go ahead and do third grade if she is done with 2nd grade. If she is a strong reader she is probably a better than average speller. My children did RS Spelling 3 and did fine. They are average spellers.

Thank You BOTH!!

I still don't know what to do  I may buy both and look more closely at them before I actually decide.

I agree with Beth, however, it might make it easier for you to decide if you knew the words that were in each level.

When I started using the R&S several years ago I had my ds spell out loud all of the words that were given in the book. After testing I found out that 1) he knew most of the words on that level and 2) the few that he did miss had the same spelling patter. I believe the woman I spoke to at R&S told me that book 3 reviewed all of the spelling patterns. So that's where I placed him.

Anyway - Milestone Ministries has samples of the books on the website and it also lists all of the words that are given in each of the books.

Don't know if this will make it any easier for you or not. Just a thought.
