College Confidential is a place where you can spend an enormous amount of time. And, frequently, the tone of the posters can be off putting; however, I did enjoy this thread that I found today.
Small, surprise gift as you leave your child at college....... (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/725992-small-surprise-gift-you-leave-your-child-college.html)

Thanks for the College Confidential link in general - I didn't know that site existed and it could be quite useful over the next few years...

Mine was a present that keeps coming. At her graduation party, I had piles of photos from over the years and asked people to write on the backs of them. See, she was a Plebe at USNA, a little different than the usual college experience--they only got mail once a week and no phones/computer/texting etc for the entire summer. And after the academic year started, they weren't allowed any media (music) or IM, etc. So, every night I write. They aren't exciting letters: "We had three new lambs and got 12" of snow", but they come every day! I don't want her to go to her mailbox (which she only has time to check about every 3 days) and not have something. She's a Firstie (senior) now and I haven't missed a day.
I've always included a page torn out of the little devotion books that our church puts out and once a week, I send copies of any articles from our newspaper that I think she'd like. And once a week, I put in some comics. Once a month I send a box with 4 batches of brownies. At Navy, the they have TWO SEMIS a DAY show up with flat rate priority boxes, stuffed to the gills with goodies! The food is pretty bad at Navy!
