The first one covers letter sounds. The second covers blending with short vowels. If you are going to use it to teach phonics, start when your child is ready. I only use it for the CM elements: poetry, picture study and narration so I used it at older ages than the phonics would warrant.

I am starting my almost 5 year old on volume two in a few months. He has been sitting in on LL for the Very Young with his 7yo brother and really likes it.

I am starting ds who will be 4 in July on the first volume. He is three now and is learning letter sounds...he has letter recognition down pat. I know vol. 1 will be review for him to some degree but I think that will be good after a summer break and it will give him some confidence as we start out on this road. He is already bothered at times that his sister 6 can do so much more than him. If we move quickly (his ability will set the pace) we may move into the phonics volume 2 somewhere in the school year.
Hope this helps. Also related to this ....anyone unbind these books so the writing exercises are easier for the child. Or even use handwriting paper instead?

I have had the bindings cut off of a few books in the past. I didn't think about this being a problem with this book. Can the book folded in half? Something that I really liked about GWG is the top spiral. Cool idea! Hope it spreads to other curriculum. Thanks for your responce!!
