Our Bible program does not include these stories, so I'd like to supplement with picture books. We have a Catholic children's story bible that includes Judith and Tobit, but only gives one page to each. We have a book about Hanukkah as well, but I'd like something more extensive on the Maccabees if possible. Anyone have any books they particularly like?

Frederick Buechner has a book for ADULTS that is a retelling of Tobit, called "On the Road With the Archangel". While I don't agree with all of Buechner's theology, and his books usually have (*ahem*) "bodily functions" mentioned in very, hm, "earthy" phrases, I do have to say that the first 2 pages of "On the Road with the Archangel" are a beautiful description of prayers. Of the half dozen of Buechner's books that I've read, I really enjoyed "Brendan", and then "On the Road with the Archangel".
Just a side note for your own possible interest! : )
Warm regards, Lori D.

I know some families do the occasional educational DVD/video. If that's you, then I've found the Nest Entertainment DVDs to be great for younger children. They are short, very well-done animated videos about historical and also some biblical figures, and they have one about Maccabees. Your library may have it-ours has the whole series and I remember seeing Maccabees there. I can't remember but you may have said you don't own a TV-more power to you! But if that's the case just disregard this post.

Drew,
This was my son's favorite Bible when he was learning to read. It has 2 pages regarding the Macabees (which I always thought was so cool!).

But I read my son a book called "Jason's Hanukkah Miracle", and we both enjoyed it very much. It's fiction though, and on a fairly easy reading level.
It's about a Jewish boy who is very angry that he misses out on all the trappings of Christmas each year. He ends up going back in time and fighting with the Maccabees, and is hit over the head with the message of how important respect for one's religion is, and how easy it is to just assimilate and lose your religious beliefs. When he returns to current times, he understands and is pleased to celebrate Hanukkah.
DS and I are Jewish, although DH is Christian. While I thought the book was a bit heavy handed in places, it certainly was an enjoyable story about the Maccabees, what they were fighting for, how against the odds their victory was, and why that victory is still important today.
