View Full Version : How is this for a homeschool stereotype?

My sister found this quote in an article about Mike Huckabee dropping out of the presidential race:
The Huckabee machine included "homeschoolers" who volunteered for him in droves. Conservative Christians who "school" their children at home, they could easily be spotted at his campaign stops: mothers with long hair and home-made dresses and fathers with crew-cuts surrounded by mobs of children with Huckabee signs. They sometimes prayed aloud for his success.
I think someone writing the article does not care much for homeschooling....

Wow.
That's all I can say right now...wow...some serious stereotyping going on there!

Okay, I supported Huckabee and I am Christian and I am conservative...but I don't have long hair and my DH has never had a crew cut. I cannot sew well enough to make an apron, :)let alone a dress I would wear in public! My mob of children is a mob of 3.... we also never got to a rally, just had a sign on the lawn! I did keep hearing throughtout his campaign (from media sources) that homeschoolers were his supporters.....I would be shocked if some of my homeschooling mom friends would ever vote for a republican, let alone a baptist preacher....

I so fight that stereotype. A girl at church told me one day that I was so not the homeschooling mom type. I asked why. Her reply, "you don't wear denim jumpers." Arghhh. I should hope not. Yikes.

Well, I guess you couldn't pick us out of a crowd as homeschoolers. Although I do keep my sons' hair cut pretty short.

Yikes, maybe we're the next group of minorities (tongue in cheek). I don't own a long dress...and those that I do own aren't exactly appropriate church attire! I do have a gaggle, but they're more likely to be shouting a candidate's name than quietly praying. And, no, we didn't vote for Huckabee.
Should be an interesting race...

Whoa. I "school" my children? No, I teach my children, and I teach them without quotation marks around the word teach.

Well, I tan so that automatically makes me different. :D
Also, I have shoulder length hair, 2 kids, dh hasn't got enough hair for a crew cut, I wear work out clothes most of the time.... nope, doesn't fit me either.

The "journalist" who "wrote" this article needs to get out more. I do have long hair, but that's because my husband thinks it's fabulously sexy that way :p

Actually, lol, I could totally see laughing with my mom about home schoolers like that. ;) I mean, she home schooled for 20-somethin' years and I've got two home schooled kiddos of my own, and while the description in that article only describes a certain *sort* of homeschooler, they sure are out there! ;)
I guess it just doesn't bother me much when someone says something silly like that. I don't think I fit a single aspect of his stereotype (though as a kid, lol, certain aspects may have fit)... But, ya know, whatever. Maybe if I thought I were really oppressed or discriminated against as a home schooler based on some of those stereotypes, it would distress me -- but I'm not.

I really can't stop giggling because this SO does not describe me and my family. I'd like to be ticked about it but it's just too ridiculous to even be bothered.

While I used to wear a denim jumper in high school (they were all the rage that year) I have yet to see a homeschooling mother IRL wearing one. I can't even bear to read the article, but it does make me want to watch that funny video by a homeschooling dad about this very stereotype again.

Oh! The horror! Long hair? Gasp! Crew-cuts? How dare they? Mobs of children? Prayed aloud? Quick! Someone call the police!
Um, I wear jeans and sweaters or sweatshirts, my hair is spiked and I think I own a skirt....should probably check on that one. No animals at all, and 2 Asian girls who DO have long hair (it's way to beautiful to cut!). We would not be praying, if we were there, we would be screaming and waving our signs. I do know one homeschool mom who fit that description, but our co-op has over 100 families and I can only think of one....
And they think the general public is undeducated...>sigh<

While I have seen this mob he speaks of, it is only a minority thing around here. Most of the moms are jeans/t-shirts/birks type moms and they so do not fit this bill.
Wonder how he'd classify me with my flaming red hair, ripped jeans, concert t-shirts and a goth daughter and I don't know what to call my 12DD.. ;)
Oh and my husband is 6'2" and weighs close to 300lbs... I'm only 5'2 and don't own a single dress to save my life--I hate those things..

From what I could determine from the info on the website, this is supposed to be a news article covering Huckabee's dropping out of the race and a short review of his candidacy, but it is written more like an opinion piece. It was painful to read. I hope he doesn't get assigned to write-up Dr. Paul's campaign end. Ugh.
I think someone needs to go back to "journalism" school.

I don't get offended by much, but that offends me. I don't have anything against anyone who DOES fit that description but the general attitude and such behind that statement is REALLY annoying! What an idiot.

How weird. I thought he was tough on hser's in Arkansas, so why would hser's necessarily be gung ho to support him? I mean, *I* liked him, darn it, but I don't fit that description any way, shape, form or fashion.....

Ok, it's too sarcastic, right? And would the "even politically conservative ones" bit be too easily misunderstood? Because my point is, the writer seems to have a problem with their... "schooling."
--------------
I wonder how one picks out folks at Senator Obama's rallies who "school" their children at home? And would one use scare quotes when describing their educational choice as one does when writing about that of the conservatives? But perhaps the writer knows something I don't by hinting that "homeschooled" children aren't *really* being schooled. (Shhhh. Please don't tell all those colleges and universities that are giving full-ride scholarships to some of those kids. They're somehow under the impression that some homeschoolers -- even politically conservative ones -- actually got an education.)
I must have missed the memo about the dress code and hairstyle requirements. Maybe they don't apply to the thousands of us moderate-to-liberal homeschoolers, though the majority of conservative ones I hang out with seem not to have been notified, either.

I didn't see the typo on casual read. I hope all comments that involve homeschoolers will represent us as well as they have so far.

My dh wishes he had enough hair for a crew cut. :) We only fit the mold in the number of kids. Other than that we can't sew and don't go to rallies and cut our hair all the time.

I can sew, but I often forget to cut my hair. But I don't much pray in public (ya think?) and I can't even chew gum and walk at the same time, much less coordinate, sewing, crew cutting, and Huckabee rallying.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. :D
