This would be for a 6th grade girl who enjoys writing and poetry.
Thanks,

We are using Classical Writing - Poetry. My ds (10) is *really* enjoying it, which was a surprise to me.

I have been really impressed with Classical Writing Poetry for Beginners. It is an 12-week program that is designed to be used in 5th grade with Homer A, but I think you could do it as a stand-alone unit study too. The analysis and imitation exercises have really stretched my boys, but now that we are almost finished with the program, they are writing very impressive poems (if I do say so myself).
We learned terms to undertand poetry, figures of speech, poetic meter, and stanza forms. Their assigment last week was to imitate Terza Rima (iambic meter with interlocking rhymes) based on the model 'Ode to the West Wind' by Shelley. My 5th & 6th grader didn't even bat an eye and proceeded to write formidable 2-stanza poems about a tiger and the sun, respectively.

I haven't actually used this, but I just found this site today. It looks pretty thorough and it's free.

Since she enjoys both, try Painless Poetry.

When she's in older, try Sound and Sense, by Perrine. It's excellent!

Well, it depends on your level of knowledge. I needed it to be sure if we were answering the rhyme scheme, poetic meter, and stanza forms questions correctly. There's also an appendix with poetry terms and definitions to help build a poetry dictionary, and an appendix about the poets and their lives to help with the author information section of the 1st day's lesson. For $16, I thought it was good to have on hand. If you're more comfortable with poetry, then no, it probably isn't necessary. Many people don't see a need for the IG for the CW series. I need a little more hand holding than that.
