I've never homeschooled a 5th grader before. It seems like such an in-between grade/age!

My dd will be 10 in the fall.

We are planning on:

Lang. Arts:
CLE at her level
Writing tales...finish up 1 early in the fall, and go on to level 2
Drawn into the Heart of Reading for literature

MUS Epsilon

SOTW with AG, vol. 2

Apologia's Botany course for elementary

Music Ace and color the classics for music

Atelier Art

Spanish

Is that going to be enough for 5th grade?

TIA!

As my child is getting older, I am finding it useful to focus on skills, rather than content--or rather I'm trying to use what I have to teach the skills they need at this age.

Have you given some thought as to what you want your child to be able to do at the end of Grade five?

For example, write a paragraph on her own. Out-line. Will all the math facts be memorized? Do you want your child to be able to label the blank-line maps with the names--or is it OK to have them pre-printed? That sort of thing.

I confess I haven't thought about this quite as much as I should have, but since it is on my mind, I'm just throwing that out there for you!

What I don't see is spelling and grammar--but perhaps they are included in your writing program?

I am under the impression that spelling and grammar are included in CLE??

In subject matter, it is very similar to what I'm doing with my 5th grader this year. So yes, I think it's enough. Sorry, but I'm not familiar with CLE to know whether it includes grammar & spelling.

And I agree, 5th grade seems like such a scary, transition year. I freaked out about it last year, too. Now, it's just another year. She's the same kid, and we did just fine. Here's what we used.

Saxon 6/5

Rod & Staff English 5 (natural speller, so we don't do formal spelling)

Latina Christiana I

Elementary Greek

Ancient History using Kingfisher (beginning outlining skills) plus lots of extra books.

CM style science (nature study and living books)

Listen to classical music tapes, beginning piano instruction, and informal picture study.

I intended to add logic this year, but it never worked out, so we'll add it next year.

My only question is about SOTW 2. I used this when my now-5th grader was in 2nd grade. Is it going to be meaty enough for a 5th grader? Obviously, using SOTW vol. 2 as a spine is fine, but will the activity guide give you good choices for extra reading at the Logic level? I know that Biblioplan uses SOTW as a spine, but has Logic-level reading choices.

Just a thought!

well...since I am using a seperate lit course (DITHOR) I just thought that I would use reading selections for each month, that worked well with our history?? Does that fit the bill for Logic level reading?

I hadn't thought about the whole history issue. We just started homeschooling a year ago, and this is our first go-around with SOTW. Honestly, she loves it so much, I was just figuring on using if for our history spine until we are at high school level. But, now I am realizing that I may be missing out on all the other stuff that may go with a history program for logic stage. Ack!

I think SOTW is a great introduction to history, and I used it in 5th grade for my oldest. However, I did find the following series by Nothing New Press that I liked better for logic students: http://www.nothingnewpress.com/guerber.shtml The only downside is that it doesn't follow the 4-year cycle as outlined in TWTM.
