I am planning to use BJU materials for US history for my 15dd. I was wondering if the syllabus from Hewitt's would be helpful.
How is it is set up? Does the student use it independently?
Since they don't give any samples, it is hard to tell if it would be useful to me.
Any insight on this syllabus or suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.:001_smile:

See my earlier suggestion (http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showpost.php?p=939972&postcount=3) when a similar question arose.

Hi Andi,
I don't log on often--saw your "visitor's" message but couldn't figure out how to reply to you. Sorry about that.
Anyway, here is the scoop on the Hewitt Syllabus.
Assuming you are looking at purchasing the relatively new 2nd syllabus, you get:
1. A day-by-day reading schedule for the BJU text book with at least one required project per quarter (student is supposed to choose from the 3 suggestions given in the syllabus at the time. In the old syllabus, no specific projects were required; with the revised edition, some projects MUST be chosen).
2. Hewitt's requirements for grades given BY QUARTER.
A rough example of requirements (my copy is stored away at the moment):
For an A grade, read assigned text readings; complete required project; complete 2 additional projects from a list of 30-40 suggestions (drawing, maps, essays, compare and contrast, timelines, etc.); read 2 books (suggestions given by the quarter), one of which must be a primary source; write book report; one map; one page of annotated timeline entries. B & C grades require less work.
3. The list of 30-40 suggested projects, book suggestions (primary, secondary, other) by quarter, timeline and map requirements.
4. I *think* they also include a quarterly test for each qtr (no answers, though, because the syllabus is designed for students enrolled in their program). I'm not sure about this because I didn't use this feature in the new syllabus, but it definitely had it in the old....
5. A few brief pages on writing a book report for a history class as opposed to an English class.
The syllabus is *definitely* meant to be used by a student working independently, and I think it is an excellent purchase for anyone wanting some ideas for fleshing out a high school US history course. (I think many of their syllabi are excellent, affordable resources from which to glean ideas... Since shipping is high with Hewitt, it makes sense to order ALL the syllabi you might be interested in at once--that is what I did.)

Thank you both for your input on Hewitt's syllabus. I have placed my order, joined the yahoo group and am happily waiting for the delivery.:hurray:
