View Full Version : Pink Hair for my 6 yo

My dd is 6 and will soon be having a birthday. It's in 10 days and I really have no gift for her. Her list includes things like Polly Pockets and My Little Pony's, and we honestly have enough of those.

She's been asking to have pink hair for as long as I can remember. I would like to do something so that at least a portion of her hair is pink. However, I would like to do this with some sort of natural color. Is there any way to do this?

I could also do an extension or get some sort of pink add-on, but I have no clue where to go for that. Do y'all have any ideas? Her birthday is on the 15th.

Manic Panic hair color is fairly natural and non permanent. There are actually pictures somewhere on their website of a little girl who has had her hair pink for so long- she thinks it's her natural color lol.

You might consider this Klutz kit:
http://www.amazon.com/Rainbow-Hairstyles-Simple-Styles-Touch/dp/1591742692/

It will work if she just wants some pink streaks, not all pink. And it's very temporary, which would be a must for me.

Do you know if this stuff works well? I don't actually mind if it's permanent, but I would very much like it to work well. Back in the 80's when I was a teen, I colored my hair, but it was hard to find products that worked well.

and how dark your DD's natural hair color is. If she has dark hair, and you really want permanent, intense pink, then you will have to lift her natural color and dye the pink over it. This is what I had done with my dark brown hair when I had bright pink streaks woven through out. Looked great, by the way!

If you don't want to go that route, then I would just pick up a can of the hair "spray paint" that is sold in most beauty supply stores. My DS likes using green or blue occasionally, and it really shows up on his brown hair. It washes out with some difficulty at the next shampoo. It potentially can rub off onto furniture though, including the brand new couch in the living room, (don't ask how I know this!) so you will need to have DD be careful if you use the spray.

Pink hair is fun! I would definitely do it if I had an interested DD!

I've known people with very blond children who use Koolaid to temporarily die their kids' hair. It works for very light blond, which it looks like your dd has if the little one in the avatar pic is her. I tried it on my kids, but their hair is just too dark for it to show.

Yes, red or pink kool-aid on blonde hair works well. Don't be afraid to add a few more packets than suggested. If you want a vibrant pink instead of a pale red, use the PINK flavors.

You are way too cool of a mom to do that for her! I want to see pictures if you do it.

My son's hair is dark brown, so when we bought blue Manic Panic, he went to a salon to have them dye his hair for him because it had to be pre-lightened.

Oooh, thank you, thank you, for the manicpanic link! I have been searching for something to use for very temporary colored streaks!

And yes, she *is* a cool mom. :)

You can go to http://kjshaircolors.blogspot.com/2007/08/kjs-hair-colors.html to see the different colors. We bleached his hair first to make it porus and then used the dye. We've used Manic Panic several of those times.

If you don't mind if it's permanent, then Manic Panic might be the way to go. Dd has brown hair, and I wouldn't be willing to bleach it -- but it looks like your dd's hair is already quite light?

The sprays or the Klutz stuff will give bright temporary color (without bleaching). And that would be my choice for a 6yo. But the Klutz stuff is just for streaks (and the book gives some fun ideas for using the different colors). The spray paint for hair can be used on a little hair or a lot, depending on preference. It kind of *looks* like spray though, you know? It's also temporary and can be used without bleaching.

I cannot find an ingredient list on the website for this. Do you know where I might find an ingredient list? Also, have you used this before? I'm curious to know how well it works IRL.

Thanks.

I'm not cool, just a sucker for my baby. I'll put a link on the blog when I get it done. We'll have to wait until after Purim cause I don't want her to have pink hair during the Purim play. I can't imagine that one of the Sound of Music kids would have pink hair. LOL

She's actually the larger of the two in the avatar pic. Her hair is the darkest of all my girls. I think I'll have to pre-lighten it, but manic panic seems to have a product for that. I need to source the ingredients, though. I might also take it to my hairdresser and have her do it. She might get a kick out of doing something like this. Plus, we could make it a time together, just the two of us.

Not really. I call her hair brown. You can see her here,

Is this the same stuff that might come out on furniture? I'd almost rather do something permanent instead of something that won't look as good AND will come off in my car and on stuff around my house. I've already got enough errant color on the walls without adding further color to the furniture, ya know?

If your local mall has a Spencer's you can buy Manic Panic there. Just don't ask me how I know this. :)

The problem with pink is that if you have dark hair, you have to bleach it first in order to get the pink color, or you end up with red instead.

When DD turned 13, that was her gift--a spa makeover--and she's got natural blonde hair and they still had to bleach it in order to get the right pink--it will turn red otherwise.

Your best bet is to get some type of manic panic or non-permanent color or even a spray. Otherwise, at 6, you are looking at doing some damage to her hair--she's only 6 and her hair is still "baby".. so you want to be careful.

Manic Panic can be bought at Hot Topic as well. And I don't care if you ask me how I know ;)... but I would go to a beauty supply store and ask them or take her to a salon and ask them.

I don't mind the red, and she will probably be ok with that. I've been a bit concerned about the quality of her hair, but frankly, it can't get much worse. The girls all have terrible hair.

Have you any experience with the lightening product from Manic Panic?

GothicGyrl

No, I've not used the lightening product from them because I don't care for Manic Panic. Going any color other than slightly abnormal (i like different shades of red), I go to a salon. For pink, I would--just so it was done right...

I do know people who use it and it is very harsh on the hair. Harsher than salon bleaching. Like crispy hair harsh. I would be worried about it burning her hair off. That's just my opinion--I'd do a salon if I could and chances are, they won't charge you too much for it.

I second the vote for the salon.

If you're looking at a permanent/bleaching process, have a professional do it. It will look "neat" and clean at the same time it's fun and unusual.

My dd wanted her hair painted pink. So we bought pink glittering hair color from the party section of WalMart. You spray it on and shampoo it out. It stayed on all day and came out easily in the bath.

I had manic panic poppyseed red hair. It faded into pink. All the kids at the camp where I worked thought I was a faery. I am.
