My partner's son is 10, and we pulled him out after second grade. For third grade, he did ancient history with SOTW. For fourth grade, he did early American history with WP AS1 and a few supplements to catch him up to modern times. For fifth grade (this year), he's done an overview of world history with The Story of Mankind. Between all three years, he's had a full and thorough course in world geography, too, using Audio Memory.

So, I'm looking at next year thinking, "What to do?" My LCC book is on loan, too, and I won't have it back 'till next week, but the recs are changing anyway. I'm thinking Middle Ages, because some homeschoolers in our local group (and friends) will be on that part of the cycle next year. I want him to continue having classical studies every year, though. So . . . what five excellent history, biography, geography, classical studies and literature books would you recommend? (He reads well and quickly; Piers Anthony is his favorite author.)

The two all-time favorite literature books for the Middle Ages that my sons liked were The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow and The Door in the Wall. I like the The Story of the Middle Ages by Christine Miller as our history spine. Sorry, that's only 3 books, but I would highly recommend them all.

Probably my favorite time period, so this is going to be more than 6, but you can cull yourself:

I agree with Rolf, and Adam of the Road is also good. Song of Roland is bloody, but good. Shining Company is one of my all time favorites......

The Scottish Chiefs, Jane Porter. I like the version illustrated by N.C. Wyeth.

Something by Shakespeare. I have a set by Oxford School that I like. I probably prefer Midsummer, but maybe Macbeth would be better for him to start, I don't know.....

Any version of Arthurian legend he's ready to read. I like Illustrated Junior Library version entitled King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table, Sidney Lanier.

For War of the Roses, The Black Arrow, Robert Louis Stevenson (again, I like N.C. Wyeth's illustrations).

I like Roger Lancelyn Green for Adventures of Robin Hood. I also like either him, or Kevin Crossley-Holland for any Arthurian legend.....

Some version of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

The Samurai's Tale, Erik Christian Haugaard.

The Three Musketeers, Dumas. I like the Illustrated Junior Library version.

National Portrait Gallery History of the Kings and Queens of England, David Williamson.

History of the World: Africa (8th to 18th Century), Raintree, Steck-Vaughn Publishers (ISBN: 9780818240967).
