View Full Version : When to start "Ordinary Parent's" reading program?

Is it too early to start The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading with DD4? She knows the alphabet and has a good start on phonics already. I don't want to overwhelm her but at the same time she seems ready.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated -- thanks!

I don't think it's too early. At 4-years old, my two youngest boys could recognize letters and their corresponding sounds, so I started teaching them to read. My middle son caught on quickly and was reading well before he was 5. My youngest son had indications of reading-readiness at 4, but it didn't really click with him until after he turned 5. I would work at his pace and take time off if needed. I say go for it. You can always slow down or stop when you need to.

Not too early to try. I've started 2 of mine at age 4, but both times I had to stop for awhile when the lessons got too hard for them. I've never been sorry that I started early, however. Like Beth said, you can always slow down or stop when you need to.

Using it with my dd4. We enjoy it. She does find it hard to read the words on the page, though, so I write them on a marker board or type them out in a larger font size. Just be sure to take a break when things aren't clicking with her.

My 4 year old and I have started using it recently.
