For a 5 year old adhd and pdd. Melatonin (1 1/2 to 2 1mg. tablets) seems to get her to sleep but then she wakes up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. Our doctor is away for 2 weeks and the other doctor in the office said to give her Valerian Root 1/2 tablet twice a day. She is having other issues as in "major" not sitting still, behaviour and mood swings and down right obnoxious. I am calling the dr. back later this afternoon just to check if they wanted her to keep on with the melatonin.
Does anyone here use these together?

My dd and I are both on melatonin 3 mg EACH at bedtime. The nurse called today in response to my question and said she can go up to 9 mg. melatonin a night! That's good because my dd sleeps well some nights and others not.
I'll have to check on the valerian root. Do they work in harmony or oppositionally? Not all herbs work together.

Are they on any meds for the PDD and ADHD?
We use melatonin but you have to remember it only helps your body get sleepy. It will not keep them asleep or help them fall back asleep if they wake up later in the night. Sadly, other than medication to help sleep we were never able to get our ADHD children to sleep all the way through the night. We do 5mg of the Melatonin and it does help them get sleepy.
I asked about the ADHD meds as if they are having troubles sitting still it sounds as if the meds are not quite right.

My family uses a time released form of Melatonin by Sweet Dreams. It seems to work better for us.
God bless,

Dd is not on any medication. The Valerian Root seems to be working today. She seems more relaxed and not all over the place. Nice! She is usually very defiant but today not so. There is a difference. Can this be already??
I know alot of people give more melatonin but I really do not want to give her more than 2/3 mg. of melatonin because I think it gives her bad dreams.
I also read that you should go off Valerian Root every so often because you can get addicted. This will be discussed at her appt. in July.

Valarian root can show an immediate difference because it is sedative. Chamomille with the valerian root is nice too, but it also needs to be stopped periodically due to ragweed allergy issues.
High simple carbohydrates at night can cause more vivid dreaming.
Cutting back and strategically having sweet treats helped with sleep a lot around here. I found some very helpful information in Little Sugar Addicts by Kathleen Desmaison. In fact it was the first side effect to the program I noticed.

We use a product called Natural Calm. It is magnesium citrate. It does wonders here to help us sleep well and feel calm :)

Dd was quite calm yesterday. I really enjoyed it. She had her moments (just like anyone else). I could have a nice conversation with her instead of constantly saying "STOP" "NO" "leaving your sister alone!" She was a little mouthy at bedtime but she fell asleep fast and slept all night!
